Summary

Description: Provides support to engineers by preparing routine layouts, detail drawings, assembly drawings, sketches and diagrams. Utilizes computer-aided design equipment and/or graphic tools, such as CAD, CAM, CATIA, Pro Engineer, Solidworks or Siemens NX. Makes copies of drawings and maintains information regarding changes to database. Uses computer assisted design/drafting equipment and software to develop designs. Creates and revises production drawings (detail and assembly drawings). Makes final sketch of proposed drawing, checking dimension of parts, materials to be used, relation of one part to another, and relation of various parts to whole structure or project. Draws finished designs from sketches. Updates Drafting and Engineering Standards. Sets up and maintains an organized file system for production drawings. Revises and updates existing drawings reflecting design changes. Reviews blueprints, plans, specifications and other documentation. Maintains notes, design calculations and other documentation (like drawings, bill of materials, list of design parameters, and performance guarantees) for future reference.

Background/Need:

The Mechanical Engineering Group provides innovative design solutions for advanced technology prototypes. Example projects include laser communication, high-energy lasers, optical sensors, biological agent detectors, and large radar antennas, for systems deployed on ground, maritime, air and spaceborne platforms. The group has expertise in precision engineering, optomechanics, mechanisms, electronics packaging, large structures, highly efficient lightweight structures, composite materials and additive manufacturing. The group is the Engineering Division s center for 3D CAD design and data management and is involved in every step of program execution from conceptual design to system integration and test.

The Cable Designer candidate will design and document system interconnects (cable and harness) and assemblies from rough sketches and/or verbal instructions from the engineering staff. He/she would be responsible for performing basic design calculations and initiating block diagrams, schematics, cable drawings, wire diagrams, wire run lists and fabrication documentation. There will be the preparation of engineering release/revision documentation, as well as assisting the responsible engineer in producing fabrication orders and supporting the fabrication and assembly process, as required. Requires little or no supervision and performs assignments with creative ability, resourcefulness, and originality.

Education and Experience Requirement:
-BS in Electrical or BS in Engineering or Associates +2 yrs: or Trade school +5 yrs min experience in electrical interconnection design, including experience in CAD (Computer Aided Design), PDM (Product Data Management) systems and schematic capture software.
Required Skills:

  • Must have knowledge of electronic design for applications, including connector selection, wire types/sizes, voltage drops, electro-mechanical packaging, electrical fabrication & assembly techniques.
  • Should be capable of developing own concepts, design layouts, and basic calculations to support their design.
  • Experience with cable/connect configuration management.
  • Candidates should have a clear understanding of cable fabrication standards and processes.
  • Must have good communication skills, require little or no supervision, and possess good creative skills.
  • Candidates must be enthusiastic, innovative and motivated self-starters able to work independently, or with an interdisciplinary group, to achieve program requirements. They must possess strong oral and written communications skills and must be able to present findings/results to internal and external organizations.
  • Experience in SolidWorks 3D Computer-Aided Design(CAD)

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience in SolidWorks Electrical and/or Zuken.
  • Knowledge of Military, ASME & IEEE standards and familiarity with standards and established processes.

Others:

  • Clearance: Interim clearance is sufficient to start.
  • Work Location: Due to the nature of the work, this position is 100% onsite.
  • Interview Process: Initial prescreening via zoom, second round onsite interview with the team. The team will entertain a second round zoom interview for candidates that are relocating but all local candidates should plan to come in person
