Summary

Why Join Digital Products at Penske

Most people know Penske for our big yellow trucks. But we're so much more than that. At Penske we have a 50-plus year history of leading the transportation and supply-chain industry, delivering world-class and award-winning technology solutions.

What most people don't know, we are just as much a data company as we are a transportation and supply chain company. We collect and analyze billions of datapoints each year, through over 300+ advanced analytical models and integrate insights from our fleet, maintenance operations, and logistics networks to give customers a more complete view of their supply chains. That connected intelligence allows us to anticipate issues, optimize resources, and deliver reliable outcomes across transportation and logistics for our customers. Penske continues to invest in, and grow, our digital products - and we need talent at all levels to help us advance and continue to lead our industry.

While data is very important, the key to our success is our people. You'll work alongside great people and on really cool projects. Ultimately, you'll help develop and ensure our technology solutions keep our company and our customers moving forward.

Position Summary:

As a Staff Systems Engineer, you will lead the teams and cross-functional efforts that enable SaaS platforms to operate securely, reliably, and at scale.

You will lead technical team members while coordinating delivery across software engineering, product, Enterprise IT, security, and operations. The role requires excellent communication, stakeholder management, diplomacy, and the ability to align multiple teams around shared priorities and delivery outcomes. You will manage dependencies, help resolve conflicts, communicate risks early, and maintain momentum across complex initiatives.

You will provide technical direction for the platforms and delivery practices supporting applications built with Java 21 and Node.js, event-driven services using Kafka, and infrastructure running on OpenShift and AWS. You will work within a shared-responsibility model, partnering with Enterprise IT to align product needs with enterprise standards.

This position is based out of our corporate location in Reading, PA. This is an office-first position, in office at least 4 days a week.

Major Responsibilities

Team and Technical Leadership
  • Lead, develop, and support DevOps and infrastructure team members, setting clear priorities, ownership, and delivery expectations
  • Guide teams supporting Java 21 services, Maven multi-module projects, Node.js applications, and Vite-based frontend build workflows
  • Provide technical direction for containerized platforms using OpenShift and Podman
  • Guide AWS platform practices, including identity and access management with IAM and evaluation or use of AWS Bedrock where appropriate
  • Oversee infrastructure and integration capabilities involving Kafka, PostgreSQL, Snowflake, Apigee, F5, and Alkira networking
  • Promote automation, repeatable infrastructure practices, secure delivery, and operational readiness
  • Coach team members and partner teams in DevOps, platform engineering, and production support practices

Cross-Functional Delivery and Stakeholder Management
  • Coordinate delivery across product, software engineering, Enterprise IT, security, networking, data, and operations teams
  • Manage cross-team dependencies, clarify owners and decision-makers, and surface blockers before they threaten delivery
  • Facilitate alignment when teams have competing priorities, technical disagreements, or conflicting timelines
  • Resolve conflicts diplomatically, keeping discussions focused on shared outcomes, risks, and practical tradeoffs
  • Communicate delivery status, decisions, risks, and mitigation plans clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Develop implementation plans, milestones, testing strategies, and resource or dependency plans for complex initiatives
  • Lead initiatives from planning through deployment and ongoing optimization
  • Maintain alignment between product roadmaps, infrastructure work, and Enterprise IT standards

Platform and Infrastructure Delivery
  • Oversee secure, scalable infrastructure and connectivity supporting digital products and SaaS platforms
  • Partner with technical teams on hybrid and cloud-native architecture across AWS and enterprise environments
  • Support application build, packaging, deployment, and release practices for Java 21, Maven multi-module, Node.js, and Vite projects
  • Guide container image and workload practices using Podman and OpenShift
  • Support reliable event-driven services and data flows involving Kafka, PostgreSQL, and Snowflake
  • Coordinate API management and traffic-management capabilities involving Apigee and F5
  • Partner with networking teams on Alkira and related cloud connectivity solutions
  • Promote effective AWS account, access, and permissions practices using IAM; support evaluation and integration of AWS Bedrock capabilities as needed
  • Ensure infrastructure and delivery solutions meet availability, resilience, security, performance, and cost expectations

CI/CD, Reliability, and Operations
  • Lead the development and improvement of CI/CD pipelines and build and release processes, including Bamboo
  • Establish consistent practices for source control, dependency management, automated testing, deployment, and rollback
  • Ensure teams identify and manage application, library, platform, and infrastructure dependencies
  • Establish and review service-level objectives, performance measures, and operational readiness criteria
  • Promote monitoring, logging, alerting, capacity planning, disaster recovery, and resilience testing
  • Coordinate incident response, root-cause analysis, and follow-up actions across responsible teams
  • Communicate operational risks and service-impacting changes early, with clear mitigation and escalation plans

Security and Governance
  • Partner with security and Enterprise IT teams to incorporate security into infrastructure and delivery workflows
  • Guide AWS IAM and access-management practices, along with secure configuration of platforms and pipelines
  • Support security and compliance requirements through automation, documentation, and evidence collection
  • Promote secure development, container, API, and network practices across teams

Qualifications:
