What you will do

Johnson Controls is seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Associate Product Engineer to join our Product Engineering team in San Antonio, TX. This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career engineer to gain hands-on experience with complex products, manufacturing processes, and engineering change management while building a strong foundation for long-term career growth.

In this role, you will be the critical link between engineering decisions and manufacturing execution, ensuring approved changes are accurately translated into bills of materials (BOMs), item master data, released drawings, and effectivity dates. Your work will directly support product quality, manufacturing efficiency, and successful implementation of engineering improvements across the facility.

As the entry point into the Product Engineering career path, this position offers the opportunity to develop deep product knowledge, collaborate closely with engineering and manufacturing teams, and gain firsthand experience with the engineering change process. Successful candidates will build the skills and expertise needed to progress into a Product Engineer role with increasing technical responsibility and product ownership.

Location: San Antonio, TX (onsite)
Candidates must reside within commuting distance of the facility or be willing to relocate. Various relocation assistance packages are available.

Work Authorization:
Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without current or future sponsorship.
How you will do it
  • Own the accuracy of every BOM line and parameter you touch; check your work against the drawing and the ECN before release.
  • Follow changes through to the floor, not just through the system, and confirm each change is implemented as planned.
  • Learn the design intent behind the changes you process, and bring questions and observations to the Product Engineers.
  • Manage many concurrent changes with competing priorities, using clear tracking so nothing ages without visibility.
  • Communicate clearly and directly with assemblers, planners, buyers, and engineers; escalate early when a change is at risk.
  • Use structured problem-solving tools (5 Why, fishbone, A3) to find and fix the source of recurring data and process errors.

What you will need
Required

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical, industrial, or manufacturing engineering, or engineering technology.
  • 1-2 years of hands-on experience creating or maintaining bills of materials in a manufacturing environment (co-op and internship experience considered).
  • Working experience with an ERP / MRP system (SAP, MAPICS, or equivalent) for BOM, item master, or engineering change transactions.
  • Ability to read engineering drawings and relate drawing content to BOM structure.

Preferred
  • Experience in an engineering change, configuration management, or document control role.
  • Exposure to PLM systems and EBOM / MBOM structures.
  • Familiarity with HVAC, refrigeration, or complex mechanical equipment.
  • Basic knowledge of GD&T and ISO 9001 quality systems.
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish.

HIRING SALARY RANGE: $75,000 - $90,000 (Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.) This role offers a competitive Bonus plan that will take into account individual, group, and corporate performance. This position includes a competitive benefits package. The posted salary range reflects the target compensation for this role. However, we recognize that exceptional candidates may bring unique skills and experiences that exceed the typical profile.
