Position Summary

We are seeking an Associate Research Engineer to support laboratory operations, experimental testing, and advanced research programs focused on loss-prevention technologies. This role will contribute to cutting-edge projects involving fire detection and suppression, explosion protection, material flammability, battery safety, advanced sensing technologies, robotics, and automated testing systems.

The ideal candidate will combine strong mechanical and electrical aptitude with laboratory testing experience to support the design, execution, and documentation of complex scientific experiments. Working alongside senior research scientists, you will help develop innovative solutions that improve safety across a variety of industries and applications.
Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct scientific experiments related to fire detection and prevention, fire suppression, explosion protection, material and product flammability, water-spray characterization, and battery safety.
  • Design, fabricate, calibrate, operate, and maintain laboratory equipment, sensors, instrumentation, and data acquisition systems used to measure temperature, pressure, velocity, gas concentration, heat flux, energy release, electrical response, and other experimental parameters.
  • Collaborate with senior scientists to design, set up, execute, and document experiments involving combustible materials, batteries, instrumentation systems, and remotely operated platforms.
  • Develop and maintain technical procedures, test plans, and laboratory documentation.
  • Recommend, procure, and manage laboratory components, instrumentation, sensors, robotic systems, data acquisition hardware, and project-related supplies.
  • Manage assigned laboratory experiments and technical projects, including planning, coordination, scheduling, documentation, and communication of results.
  • Develop, integrate, troubleshoot, and maintain automated, robotic, and remotely operated testing systems and sensing platforms to support laboratory and field research activities.
  • Ensure laboratory operations are conducted safely and in accordance with established safety standards and procedures.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate's, Bachelor's, or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related technical field. Exceptional candidates with extensive directly related experience may also be considered.
  • Strong hands-on mechanical, electrical, and laboratory skills, including the safe use of tools, instrumentation, and test equipment.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical, electrical, controls, and plumbing systems used in laboratory and experimental environments.
  • Ability to design, fabricate, integrate, and troubleshoot experimental setups, fixtures, instrumentation systems, and control systems.
  • Knowledge of combustion, flammability, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and experimental testing methodologies.
  • Experience conducting flammability, combustion, fire, or thermal-hazard testing.
  • Experience with battery testing or battery-safety research, including test setup, instrumentation, thermal measurements, electrical measurements, and charging infrastructure.
  • Experience working with robotics, automation, control systems, machine vision, embedded systems, or distributed sensing technologies.
  • Experience with sensors, instrumentation, and measurement diagnostics, including familiarity with optical or laser-based measurement techniques.
  • Familiarity with machine shop equipment, fabrication methods, and prototyping techniques.
  • Proficiency with data acquisition systems such as NI LabVIEW or comparable platforms, along with programming experience in Python, MATLAB, or similar languages.
  • Knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and engineering design software such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or equivalent tools.
  • Strong understanding of laboratory safety practices, including work involving fire hazards, pressurized systems, energized equipment, and battery technologies.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to document testing activities and communicate technical findings clearly.
  • Demonstrated teamwork, organizational, and project management skills.
  • Proven ability to develop practical, innovative solutions to laboratory and experimental challenges.
