Summary

Job Description:

At Chewy, it is our mission to become the most trusted and convenient online destination for pet parents and our partners vets and service providers alike. Our success is measured by the happiness of the people and pets we serve, not simply by the amount of pet supplies we deliver. That's why we continue to think of outside-the-Chewy-box ways to delight, surprise, and thank pet lovers who are dedicated to us!

Our Opportunity

Chewy is seeking highly driven and passionate early-career professionals to join our team in Boston, MA as Software Engineers. In this role, you will build and scale platforms that power Chewy's Data Science and AI capabilities, enabling teams across the company to develop, evaluate, and deploy machine learning and generative AI solutions at scale.

You will work on infrastructure supporting forecasting, optimization, experimentation, and real-time decision-making, while helping evolve our development practices toward Spec-Driven Development (SDD) and AI-assisted engineering helping Chewy deliver on its mission to be the most trusted and convenient destination for pet parents.

What You'll Do
  • Design and build scalable data pipelines (ETL/ELT) and services that support training, evaluation, and deployment of machine learning and AI models
  • Develop and maintain ML platforms and tooling for experimentation, simulation, and production model serving
  • Implement data ingestion, transformation, and validation workflows to ensure high-quality, reliable datasets for modeling
  • Contribute to Spec-Driven Development (SDD) practices by translating requirements into testable specifications and automated validation workflows
  • Leverage AI developer tools and LLM-assisted workflows to accelerate development, testing, and debugging
  • Build and integrate APIs, microservices, and orchestration pipelines for end-to-end ML lifecycle management
  • Collaborate closely with Data Scientists, Engineers, and Product Managers to understand modeling workflows and improve developer experience
  • Write clean, maintainable Python code and contribute to CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and production readiness
  • Participate in building next-generation solutions using LLMs, prompt engineering, and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) patterns

What You'll Need
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field
  • 3-5 years of experience in Python development, with strong knowledge of data and ML libraries (e.g., pandas, PySpark, scikit-learn, PyArrow)
  • Hands-on experience building and maintaining ETL/data pipelines and working with large-scale datasets
  • Experience with SQL and strong understanding of data modeling, transformations, and data quality
  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS preferred) and distributed data processing systems
  • Familiarity with software engineering fundamentals (OOP, data structures, testing, version control)
  • Exposure to machine learning workflows and model lifecycle management
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and take ownership of deliverables

Bonus
  • Experience with LLMs, generative AI, prompt engineering, or SSD
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Copilot, Claude, GPT-based workflows)
  • Experience with Spec-Driven Development (SDD) or test/spec-first development approaches
  • Experience with MLOps tooling (MLflow, Airflow, Kubeflow, SageMaker, etc.)
  • Experience building data pipelines with Spark, Airflow, or similar orchestration tools
  • Familiarity with containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and automated testing frameworks
  • Understanding of model validation, monitoring, and production reliability practices
  • Experience working in an agile environment (Scrum, Kanban)
  • Passion for building platforms that enable scalable, high-quality data science and AI systems

We're building something great, and we'd love for you to be part of it!

The base salary range for this role is $120,000 - $190,000.00.
