Job Description

Who We Are
Lockheed Martin is a global security and aerospace company that employs approximately 114,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration, and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products, and services. Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control (MFC) is one of four Lockheed Martin business areas.

By bringing together people that use their passion for purposeful innovation, at Lockheed Martin we keep people safe and solve the world's most complex challenges. Our people are some of the greatest minds in the industry and truly make Lockheed Martin a great place to work. With our employees as our priority, we provide diverse career opportunities designed to propel development and boost agility.

Our flexible schedules, competitive pay, and comprehensive benefits enable our employees to live a healthy, fulfilling life at and outside of work. At Lockheed Martin, we place an emphasis on empowering our employees by fostering innovation, integrity, and exemplifying the epitome of corporate responsibility. Your Mission is Ours.

We are seeking an experienced Guidance and Control (GNC) Engineer who will join a highly skilled team of systems engineering technologists and algorithm developers supporting missile system and fire control system design, development, integration, and test.

What You Will Be Doing

A GNC Engineer is responsible for the design, analysis, integration, testing, and validation of the algorithms and hardware that enable a vehicle-whether a missile, unmanned aircraft, or manned spacecraft-to determine where it is, where it's going, and how to get there safely and accurately. The role bridges multidisciplinary domains, combining control theory, aerospace dynamics, hardware modeling, simulation, and system-level architecture.

The GNC Engineer ensures that an air vehicle knows its state, decides on the optimal path, and executes that path reliably through robust guidance laws, precise navigation filters, sophisticated flight-path planning, and stable autopilot/control systems-all validated through rigorous simulation and flight testing. This is achieved through some combination of the following tasks:
  • Develop guidance law algorithms and verify their performance with high-fidelity simulation and data analysis
  • Create trajectory-generation tools that produce feasible, optimal paths while accommodating all vehicle hardware and dynamic limitations
  • Design closed-loop control laws to enable vehicle state manipulation that achieves the commanded mission; generate high fidelity simulations to verify performance
  • Evaluate system performance in complex scenarios and environments and verify system and subsystem level requirements
  • Conduct Monte-Carlo and sensitivity analyses to quantify the impact of sensor errors, actuator degradations, and flight-environment variations on system performance
  • Perform critical studies, analyses, and test activities that support ground and flight test efforts including Hardware-In-The-Loop (HWIL) activities
  • Provide technical team leadership required to achieve specific work package objectives.
  • Provide technical guidance, code reviews, and training for less-experienced engineers.
  • Support program reviews and technical interchange meetings with internal leadership and/or external customers.

Basic Qualifications

  • BS in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, physics, computer science, applied mathematics, or similar STEM degree.
  • 8+ years of hands-on experience performing guidance, navigation, or flight control engineering on aerospace or missile applications.
  • ship and an ability to attain Secret Clearance is required. An Interim Clearance is needed to start this position.

  • Demonstrated responsibility for the full life-cycle of GNC algorithms (concept, requirements generation, design, implementation, verification, and flight test)
  • Demonstrated expertise in relevant mathematical concepts like linear algebra, dynamics, coordinate frame transformations, and fundamental control theory (PI filters, Laplace transform, Fourier analysis, state-space modeling, etc.)
  • Demonstrated expertise in guidance law or autopilot/flight controls algorithm development, test, and verification.
  • Demonstrated experience with SW development environments like Git using programming languages such as MATLAB, Python, C++, FORTRAN, or Ada.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical teams to achieve specific work package objectives.
  • Excellent written communication skills to include generation and presentation of verification plans, analysis reports, algorithm description documentation, other technical documents.
  • Effective oral presentation skills for design reviews and briefings to customers, partners, and senior leadership.

  • Desired skills

    • Master's degree in an engineering discipline with concentration in controls, flight dynamics, or guidance.
    • Experience using a Linux-based operating system
    • Experience integrating and testing hardware and software in Hardware In-the-Loop (HWIL)
    • Experience with flight-control hardware, actuator interfaces, and inertial sensors
    • Use of oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, spectrum analyzers, and high-speed data-acquisition for timing and EMI verification.
    • Execution of HIL/SIL campaigns and support of ground-test and flight-test campaigns.

    EEO

Lockheed Martin is an equal opportunity employer. Qualified candidates will be considered without regard to legally protected characteristics.
The application window will close in 90 days; applicants are encouraged to apply within 5 - 30 days of the requisition posting date in order to receive optimal consideration.
