Senior Okta Engineer / Developer

Identity & Access Management | Cloud & SaaS Integration

Position Summary

The Senior Okta Engineer/Developer is responsible for designing, developing, configuring, and optimizing identity and single sign-on (SSO) solutions across the enterprise using Okta Identity Cloud. This role drives end-to-end integration of cloud and SaaS applications, enhances security posture, improves user experience, and enables scalable, automated IAM operations. The engineer partners closely with application, cloud, security, DevOps, and infrastructure teams to implement modern authentication patterns and zero-trust access controls.

Key Responsibilities

Identity Platform Engineering & Development

Architect, configure, and maintain Okta tenants, including Universal Directory, Lifecycle Management (LCM), SSO, MFA, API Access Management, and Workforce Identity features.

Develop custom integrations using Okta Workflows, Okta Hooks, Okta Identity Engine, and Okta APIs/SDKs (JavaScript, Python, .NET, Node.js, etc.).

Implement and manage SCIM provisioning and lifecycle automation for cloud, on-prem, and SaaS applications.

Build reusable patterns, templates, and libraries for rapid, secure application onboarding.

Application & Cloud Integration

Lead the integration of SSO (SAML, OIDC, OAuth 2.0) for enterprise, cloud, and SaaS applications.

Collaborate with application and development teams to modernize authentication, eliminate legacy SSO, and migrate applications into Okta.

Develop API-based integrations between Okta and cloud platforms (Azure, AWS), HR systems, ITSM systems, and directory services.

Security, Zero Trust & Access Management

Implement strong MFA, adaptive risk-based authentication, step-up authentication, and device trust policies.

Ensure identity security alignment with Zero Trust, NIST, CIS, HITRUST, HIPAA, and organizational policies.

Partner with cybersecurity teams to respond to identity-related incidents and strengthen identity threat detection.

Automation, CI/CD & DevSecOps

Create automation pipelines for Okta configuration management using Terraform, GitHub/GitLab, or other IaC tools.

Automate identity lifecycle events (joiners/movers/leavers), access reviews, and account governance workflows.

Validate changes through automated testing, DevOps practices, and controlled release processes.

Operational Excellence

Troubleshoot complex authentication and authorization issues across cloud, SaaS, mobile, and on-prem ecosystems.

Optimize performance, maintain platform health, and ensure resilience and high availability.

Create operational runbooks, standards, architecture diagrams, and technical documentation.

Mentor junior engineers and serve as SME for Okta best practices across the organization.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, IT, or equivalent experience.

5–8+ years of experience in identity and access management engineering.

3+ years hands-on Okta engineering/development (Identity Engine preferred).

Strong expertise in:

SAML, OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect

Okta Workflows / Hooks / API / SDK

SCIM provisioning & lifecycle automation

MFA & adaptive authentication

Access policies, routing rules, and app assignments

Directory integration (AD, Azure AD, LDAP)

Development experience in JavaScript, Python, PowerShell, or Node.js.

Experience with Terraform, Git, REST APIs, Postman, and automation frameworks.

Strong troubleshooting experience across cloud identity, networking, authentication, and app integration.

Preferred Qualifications

Okta certifications (Okta Certified Professional, Administrator, Consultant, Developer, or Architect).

Experience with Azure AD / Entra ID, AWS IAM, Ping, SailPoint, or other IAM tools.

Experience in highly regulated industries (healthcare, finance, government).

Familiarity with NIST SP 800-63, Zero Trust Architecture, HITRUST, HIPAA.

Experience integrating Okta with ITSM systems like ServiceNow or Jira.

Experience building identity microservices, policy engines, or custom OIDC integrations.
