The Opportunity

StaffRight Associates is recruiting for a Senior or Principal Embedded Software Engineer on behalf of a well-established client building hardware for the expanding space sector. In this full-time role, based entirely on-site in San Diego, CA, you’ll create the software that powers space-bound computer boards and related systems. That code demands real-time performance and reliability. It’s a hands-on seat on a strong engineering team, working with compelling technology on projects headed for orbit.

What You’ll Do

  • Architect, implement, document, and validate embedded software across the client’s aerospace product portfolio.
  • Build and troubleshoot low-level foundations, including bootloaders, board support packages, device drivers, and kernels, targeting RTEMS, Embedded Linux, VxWorks 6.9/7.0, and bare-metal platforms.
  • Engineer embedded code in C/C++ and assembly, and craft Python desktop GUI utilities that drive automated test equipment, using libraries such as pyvisa and nidaqmx.
  • Power system verification, troubleshooting, and production by delivering test programs, test plans, and deep technical know-how.
  • Represent engineering in technical conversations with customers and in multidisciplinary design reviews.
  • Shape software architecture, project planning, risk mitigation, and continuous process improvement across multiple programs.

What You Bring

  • 8–30 years of hands-on Embedded Software Development experience.
  • Deep proficiency in C/C++ and Python, plus proven expertise in Board Support Package (BSP), Kernel, and Device Driver Development.
  • A solid track record with Embedded Linux, VxWorks, and/or Bare-Metal platforms.
  • Skill in Low-Level Hardware Debugging with bench instrumentation and In-Circuit Emulators, plus working knowledge of Buildroot or Yocto and NAND Flash File Systems.
  • A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related discipline. A master’s degree is a plus.
  • Sharp analytical and problem-solving instincts, paired with a collaborative, team-first mindset.
  • Residence in the San Diego area. The client is not offering relocation assistance or visa sponsorship.

Compensation & Total Rewards

  • Base salary range: $150,000–$220,000 annually (USD)
  • Full-time, direct-hire position
