Embedded Software Engineer (Wireless Embedded Systems)

Location: Onsite

Schedule: Monday-Friday, 9:00 AM-5:00 PM

Pay Rate: $65.00-$70.00 per hour

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Embedded Software Engineer to design, develop, and maintain firmware for advanced wireless embedded systems. This role will partner closely with hardware, RF, and systems engineering teams to deliver secure, reliable, and low-power connected products. The ideal candidate will bring strong embedded firmware expertise, wireless communication experience, and a passion for solving complex technical challenges.
Key Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, test, and maintain embedded firmware for microcontroller-based products.
  • Develop software for bare-metal and RTOS-based embedded systems.
  • Collaborate with hardware and RF engineers to ensure seamless system integration.
  • Implement and optimize wireless communication protocols and networking functionality.
  • Design and support bootloaders, firmware update mechanisms, and secure provisioning processes.
  • Troubleshoot and debug embedded systems using industry-standard tools.
  • Participate in product validation, testing, certification, and release activities.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, design specifications, and test procedures.
  • Contribute to code reviews and continuous improvement of software development practices.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline.
  • Strong experience developing firmware in Embedded C.
  • Experience with:
    • ARM Cortex-M microcontrollers
    • Bare-metal firmware development
    • RTOS-based systems
    • Interrupt-driven architectures
    • DMA, timers, watchdogs, GPIO
    • UART, SPI, and I2C communication interfaces
    • Bootloaders and firmware update systems
    • J-Link, SWD, GDB, or similar debugging tools
    • Low-power firmware development techniques
Wireless Communications Experience (Required)

Candidates must have experience working with wireless communication technologies such as:
  • RF communication systems
  • Sub-GHz wireless technologies
  • Z-Wave networks
  • Wireless sensor networks
  • Mesh networking architectures
  • OTA (Over-the-Air) firmware updates
  • RF coexistence concepts

Strong preference will be given to candidates with experience in:
  • Z-Wave development
  • Proprietary Sub-GHz protocols
  • Custom protocol development
  • Low-power wireless networking
  • MAC/PHY layer implementation or modification
Preferred Silicon Labs Experience

Experience with any of the following is highly desirable:
  • Silicon Labs EFR32 family
  • Simplicity Studio

  • Silicon Labs wireless SDKs
  • Silicon Labs wireless stack APIs
  • Z-Wave 700/800 Series devices

Security Experience (Preferred)

Experience with embedded security technologies including:
  • Secure boot
  • Firmware signing
  • Key provisioning
  • Encrypted OTA updates
  • Secure pairing and authentication
  • Replay protection
  • Secure credential storage
Software Architecture & Development Practices

Preferred experience with:
  • Modular firmware architecture
  • State machine design
  • Event-driven software systems
  • Hardware abstraction layers (HAL)
  • Git version control
  • CI/CD pipelines for firmware development
  • Automated testing frameworks
  • Technical documentation and design standards
RF Engineering Knowledge (Preferred)

Candidates with the following RF experience will stand out:
  • Antenna and PCB layout awareness
  • RF sensitivity optimization
  • Link budget analysis
  • Sub-GHz propagation behavior
  • EMC/EMI troubleshooting
  • FCC and CE certification support
  • Spectrum analyzer usage
