About the TeamThe Robotics Reliability Engineering (RRE) team at Nuro is dedicated to ensuring the reliability and resilience of the software and systems that power our autonomous vehicle fleet. RRE acts as the frontline incident response team for complex technical issues that arise during fleet operations-especially those that block on-road missions or impact fleet-wide performance. When operational teams encounter problems they can't resolve, RRE steps in to triage, diagnose, and coordinate the resolution, often collaborating with both hardware and software engineering groups.
About the RoleAs a Senior Reliability Engineer, you'll be the technical point of contact (POC) for diagnosing and resolving on-site issues. You'll work directly with our robotic systems, acting as the first line of defense for a wide range of technical challenges, from system-level glitches to software and connectivity problems.
Your role goes beyond just fixing things. We're looking for someone who can proactively identify systemic weaknesses and architect long-term solutions. You'll lead projects from end to end, driving improvements through automation, process enhancements, and cross-functional collaboration. A key part of the role will be to develop clear data visualizations that help the entire team understand problem trends and make data-driven decisions.
Additionally, you'll serve as a technical mentor for our team, sharing your knowledge to improve our collective problem-solving capabilities and building foundational infrastructure.
About the Work- Support our operations team as they carry out autonomous vehicle testing and customer facing missions, ensuring our software and hardware are operating properly.
- Analyze software issues for contributing factors, themes, and corrective actions. Document results to share the learnings across Nuro's organization.
- Develop monitoring, auditing and reporting systems and workflows for Nuro's secure and reliable fleet operations with timely insights. Our tools include Prometheus, Grafana, Google Cloud Platform, Terraform, Kubernetes.
- Propose, design, review, execute, and lead technical projects for the Robotics Reliability Engineering team.
- Build tools and automation to advance our capabilities for streamlined diagnosis and troubleshooting.
- Participate in on-call support rotation to diagnose and mitigate software issues with Nuro's vehicle fleet.
- Collaborate with other technical teams including Hardware, Performance, Connectivity, Security, Embedded SW and others to identify cross-team risks and solutions.
About You- Keen systematic analysis and problem-solving skills; a passion for understanding and debugging complex systems.
- Expertise building tools for automating and troubleshooting Linux systems.
- Strong ability to reverse engineer unexpected behaviors to source code triggers.
- Coding proficiency, preferably in C/C++, Python, Golang, and/or Bash.
- Understanding and hands-on experience with Unix/Linux internals and networking.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, able to identify problems and take initiative to fix them.
- BS, MS in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or other related technical field.
- Experience in an on-call support rotation.
- Experience monitoring and securing server infrastructure at scale.
Bonus Points - Experience working with robotics, sensors, automotive, or aerospace systems.
- Experience in a site reliability, systems, and/or release engineering role.
- Experience in building AI/ML services for troubleshooting and incident response.
At Nuro, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. For this position, the reasonably expected base pay range is between $145,830 and $219,000 for the level at which this job has been scoped. Your base pay will depend on several factors, including your experience, qualifications, education, location, and skills. In the event that you are considered for a different level, a higher or lower pay range would apply. This position is also eligible for an annual performance bonus, equity, and a competitive benefits package.
