About Company

Company is a growing technology company delivering a specialist SaaS accounting platform. Our platform is trusted by foundation clients who require robust, compliant, and reliable financial management tooling. Hosted on Microsoft Azure, our solution combines a modern ReactJS front end with C# microservices and a SQL Server data layer, and we continue to invest in evolving our technology to meet the demands of our expanding client base.

We operate with the agility of a scale-up and the reliability expectations of enterprise software. Our incoming CTO will be a key member of the leadership team, shaping the technical direction of the business at an exciting stage of growth.

Role Overview

The Chief Technology Officer (CTO) will lead all aspects of technology strategy, engineering delivery, and platform architecture at Company. This is a hands-on leadership role suited to a commercially-minded technologist who can bridge day-to-day engineering management with long-term strategic thinking.

The CTO will be accountable for the stability, security, scalability, and continuous improvement of our core SaaS platform, whilst building a high-performing engineering culture and driving the modernisation of legacy components within our technology estate.

Key Responsibilities

Technology Strategy & Leadership

  • Define and own the multi-year technology roadmap aligned to the company’s commercial objectives and client needs.
  • Serve as a key member of the executive leadership team, contributing to company-wide strategy and business planning.
  • Translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions and communicate these clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Maintain a clear architectural vision for the platform, balancing innovation with pragmatic delivery.

Engineering Management & Team Development

  • Lead, mentor, and grow a multi-disciplinary engineering team encompassing front-end, back-end, and QA disciplines.
  • Establish and embed engineering best practices, including code review standards, testing protocols, CI/CD pipelines, and sprint ceremonies.
  • Drive a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and psychological safety within the development team.
  • Own the hiring and retention strategy for technical talent, partnering with the CEO on headcount planning.

Platform & Architecture

  • Provide hands-on oversight of the Azure-hosted SaaS platform, ensuring high availability, performance, and security.
  • Own the architectural evolution from the current stack (React 16, Ant Design 5, Semantic UI, C# Azure Functions & Microservices, SQL Server) toward a modern, maintainable, and well-documented architecture.
  • Lead the strategic migration away from legacy Classic ASP components, managing risk and business continuity throughout.
  • Define and enforce API design standards and integration patterns across the platform.
  • Oversee the database architecture on SQL Server, including performance tuning, data integrity, and disaster recovery.

Security, Compliance & Risk

  • Ensure the platform meets all relevant data security and compliance obligations appropriate to the financial services and foundation sector.
  • Own the information security posture of the business, including penetration testing, vulnerability management, and incident response planning.
  • Maintain and test business continuity and disaster recovery plans for all production systems.
  • Act as the primary technical point of contact for client security questionnaires, audits, and due diligence processes.

Product & Client Collaboration

  • Partner closely with the CEO and client-facing teams to ensure technology delivers tangible value to foundation clients.
  • Contribute to product discovery and roadmap prioritisation, ensuring engineering capacity is aligned to the highest-impact initiatives.
  • Represent Company's technology capability externally, including in sales and client relationship contexts where required.

Vendor & Infrastructure Management

  • Manage relationships with key technology vendors, cloud providers, and third-party software partners.
  • Own the Azure infrastructure strategy, including cost optimisation, environment management, and cloud governance.
  • Evaluate and recommend tooling, platforms, and third-party services that improve team productivity and platform capability.

Skills & Experience

Essential

  • Proven track record in a senior engineering leadership role (CTO, VP Engineering, Head of Engineering) within a SaaS or B2B software business.
  • Strong hands-on background in C# / .NET, with practical experience of Azure Functions, microservices patterns, and RESTful API design.
  • Experience with Microsoft Azure cloud services, including but not limited to Azure Functions, Azure Service Bus, Azure DevOps, Azure SQL, and App Services.
  • Solid understanding of SQL Server, including schema design, query optimisation, and data management practices.
  • Demonstrable experience leading front-end engineering teams working with React and component libraries (knowledge of React 16 is required, Ant Design, or Semantic UI is advantageous).
  • Experience managing and progressively modernising legacy technology estates, ideally including ASP/Classic ASP or similar.
  • Commercially aware – able to balance engineering ambition with pragmatic prioritisation and budget awareness.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, including the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Experience building or scaling development teams and engineering processes from the ground up.

Desirable

  • Background in financial software, accounting platforms, ERP, or regulated software environments.
  • Familiarity with the public sector, charitable foundations, or financial compliance requirements.
  • Experience with DevOps practices including CI/CD pipeline ownership, automated testing, and infrastructure-as-code (e.g. Terraform, Bicep).
  • Exposure to modern front-end migration strategies (e.g. React 18+, TypeScript adoption).
  • Knowledge of software security frameworks, ISO 27001, SOC 2, or equivalent.
  • Experience working in a company at a similar growth stage (20–50 people) where you have had to ‘wear multiple hats’.

Personal Attributes

  • A leader who invests in the growth of those around them, not just the technology.
  • Pragmatic and delivery-focused – comfortable balancing long-term vision with short-term business reality.
  • Naturally collaborative, building strong relationships across engineering, product, sales, and the executive team.
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and able to drive clarity in a fast-moving, resource-conscious environment.
  • High standards of personal integrity, especially given the sensitive financial data handled by our platform.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset with a genuine interest in the mission of foundations and the non-profit sector.

What We Offer

  • A senior leadership position with real influence over company direction and culture.
  • The opportunity to shape and modernise a well-established SaaS platform at an exciting growth stage.
  • Competitive executive compensation package, including base salary and performance-related incentives.
  • Flexible hybrid working arrangements.
  • A collaborative, low-ego leadership team that values honest dialogue and shared accountability.
  • The chance to make a meaningful contribution to clients serving the public good.
