Job Summary

We are currently seeking a Transportation Cybersecurity Specialist. This position is a part-time opportunity located in the DC Metro region (Hybrid).

Within Battelle's Infrastructure Safety & Security (ISS) Division, we support federal, state, and commercial clients in advancing safe, secure, and resilient transportation systems. The Transportation Cybersecurity Specialist will support the future of secure mobility by protecting the technologies that underpin connected, automated, and intelligent transportation systems. This is a senior-level role requiring expertise spanning transportation engineering, cybersecurity, automotive technologies, operational technology (OT), emerging vehicle connectivity, and artificial intelligence (AI).

The selected candidate will work closely with federal agencies, state and local transportation organizations, industry partners, vehicle manufacturers, and technology providers to improve the resilience and security of critical transportation systems across the nation's surface transportation ecosystem.

Responsibilities

As a Transportation Cybersecurity Specialist, the selected individual will provide technical leadership in protecting cyber-physical transportation systems, industrial control systems (ICS), connected and automated vehicles, and intelligent transportation infrastructure from evolving cyber threats. Responsibilities may include:

  • Providing technical leadership on cybersecurity issues affecting transportation systems, including highways, transit, freight, rail, and intelligent transportation systems (ITS)
  • Evaluating security architectures for connected vehicles (CV), automated vehicles (AV), and cooperative driving automation (CDA) technologies
  • Developing cybersecurity strategies and mitigation approaches for transportation operational technology (OT) and industrial control systems (ICS)
  • Evaluating vulnerabilities created by the use of AI in transportation systems and applications
  • Evaluating cybersecurity implications of emerging transportation technologies, including connected vehicle ecosystems, Automated Driving Systems (ADS), field devices, traffic signal systems, Traffic Management Centers (TMCs), and transportation IoT devices
  • Assessing cybersecurity risks associated with cyber-physical systems (CPS) supporting transportation infrastructure
  • Analyzing vulnerabilities affecting vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications, roadside infrastructure, cloud services, and transportation management systems
  • Performing cybersecurity risk assessments, threat modeling, vulnerability analyses, and security architecture reviews
  • Participating in cybersecurity exercises, penetration testing activities, tabletop exercises, and incident response planning
  • Supporting the development of cybersecurity requirements for transportation technology procurements and system deployments
  • Advising clients on secure system design throughout the transportation system lifecycle
  • Developing technical reports, white papers, standards recommendations, and guidance documents
  • Supporting federal research initiatives related to transportation cybersecurity
  • Presenting technical findings to government sponsors, industry stakeholders, and professional organizations

Key Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Cybersecurity, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Transportation Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related technical discipline
  • 10+ years of relevant professional experience in cybersecurity, transportation systems, automotive cybersecurity, or critical infrastructure protection
  • Demonstrated experience with cyber-physical systems (CPS) security
  • Experience securing industrial control systems (ICS) and operational technology (OT) environments
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity protections for connected vehicles, automated vehicles, vehicle electronics, transportation infrastructure, and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS)
  • Experience performing cybersecurity assessments and risk analyses
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, including demonstrated ability to develop presentations, technical reports, executive briefings, and similar products for government and commercial clients
  • Ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary engineering and policy teams
  • Willingness to travel as required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting the U.S. Department of Transportation, state Departments of Transportation, automotive OEMs, or defense and homeland security programs
  • CISSP, GICSP, GIAC GRID, CISM, Security+, CEH, ISA/IEC 62443 Cybersecurity Expert certification, or equivalent professional certification
  • Advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in a relevant field
  • Working knowledge of NIST cybersecurity frameworks, including the Cybersecurity Framework (CSF), Risk Management Framework (RMF), SP 800-53, SP 800-82, SP 1800 series, and the AI Risk Management Framework
  • Familiarity with industrial control systems standards, including ISA/IEC 62443, the Purdue Model, Zero Trust Architecture for OT, and NERC CIP concepts
  • Knowledge of automotive cybersecurity standards, including ISO/SAE 21434, UNECE WP.29 (R155/R156), SAE J3061, AUTOSAR security concepts, automotive Ethernet security, secure ECU design, and secure Over-the-Air (OTA) updates
  • Familiarity with connected vehicle and V2X standards, including IEEE 1609 WAVE, IEEE 802.11p, Cellular V2X (C-V2X), SAE J2735, SAE J2945, and the Security Credential Management System (SCMS)
  • Experience with transportation technologies such as connected and automated vehicles (CAV), traffic signal control systems, transportation management centers, connected intersections, freight technologies, transit communications, edge computing, and cloud-based transportation platforms

Compensation Data

Battelle is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. The salary range for this role is $154,500 - $220,200 per year, in addition to our comprehensive benefits package. A candidate's salary is determined by various factors, including but not limited to education, relevant work experience, skills, and certifications. Salary ranges may vary based on geographic location and market conditions.
