Summary

Job Title: Sr. Mfg Engineer
Location: Itasca, IL
This role owns the creation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of shop-floor work instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs), standard work, and visual aids used in a manufacturing environment. The specialist works directly with production associates, supervisors, manufacturing/industrial engineering, quality, safety, and training to capture current methods, define repeatable standard work, and ensure documents are controlled, available at point-of-use, and consistently followed across shifts.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop clear, visual work instructions (WI), SOPs, job aids, and standard work for manufacturing and assembly operations, aligned to safety, quality, and production requirements.
  • Perform on-floor process discovery (gemba): observe operations across shifts, interview operators/SMEs, and capture critical steps, standard work sequence, cycle time, WIP limits, tools/fixtures, and required PPE.
  • Create and maintain process maps and flow diagrams for manufacturing cells/lines, including material flow, handoffs, rework loops, and escalation points.
  • Standardize WI/SOP structure and content (operation steps, key points, reasons, photos/diagrams, torque/spec limits, quality checkpoints, and safety callouts); maintain templates and a style guide.
  • Administer document control for manufacturing documents: revision history, approvals, effective dates, controlled distribution, point-of-use posting, and removal of obsolete versions.
  • Support engineering changes (ECN/ECO) and continuous improvement (Kaizen): update WIs/SOPs for new equipment, tooling, fixtures, workstations, line balance changes, or layout revisions.
  • Create training materials tied to WIs/SOPs and support operator training, certification/qualification, and skill matrix updates; verify understanding through observation and competency checks.
  • Create and maintain manufacturing support documents such as checklists, setup/changeover instructions, first-piece approval sheets, visual controls, and error-proofing (poka-yoke) guidance.
Required Qualifications:
  • 6+ years of experience creating shop-floor work instructions/SOPs or process documentation in manufacturing (assembly, machining, packaging, or similar environments).
  • Working knowledge of standard work and Lean fundamentals (e.g., 5S, waste identification, visual management, problem solving).
  • Ability to capture and document manufacturing processes through observation, time studies/basic work measurement, and operator/technician interviews.
  • Strong technical writing skills with attention to detail and the ability to write unambiguous step-by-step instructions.
  • Proven ability to work cross-functionally (Operations, Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, Maintenance, EHS) and drive documents through review/approval.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and document management tools (e.g., SharePoint); comfort working with shop-floor systems (e.g., ERP/MES) is a plus.
  • Able to manage multiple priorities and spend time in production areas to validate standard work and support implementation.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with time studies, line balancing, work measurement, or industrial engineering methods in a plant environment.
  • Strong capability with visual work instructions (photos/diagrams), including safety callouts, critical-to-quality steps, and specification/torque tables.
  • Experience supporting operator training, certification/qualification programs, and skills/coverage matrices across shifts.
  • Working knowledge of manufacturing documentation and systems (e.g., routings, BOMs, work centers, ECN/ECO, MES) and ability to read basic engineering drawings/specifications.
  • Deliverables & Success Measures
  • Up-to-date WI/SOP library with consistent templates, clear ownership, and revision history.
  • Reduced onboarding/training time and improved training completion/competency validation rates.
  • Improved audit readiness: high document compliance, fewer findings related to outdated/incorrect instructions.
  • Measurable reduction in defects, rework, and safety incidents attributable to clearer standard work and point-of-use guidance.
  • Document turnaround time (request-to-release) tracked and improved over time.
