Project Introduction 
The Office of Performance Analysis and Integrity manages and enhances the Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA) Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) which resides on one Oracle M8 Supercluster database and thirteen application servers.  Our team provides the technical services required to sustain EDW applications to include Project Management, Data Warehouse Management, Advanced Analytics, Tableau Server Administration/Tableau Desktop Administration, Technical Collaboration Support, Lessons Learned, Executive Orders and Special Projects, Architectural Enhancement, and Cloud Migration. We also provide management, enhancement, integration, implementation, maintenance, modernization, and infrastructure support for EDW applications and enhancement and maintenance of business intelligence capabilities and predictive analytics.  

9th Way Insignia is looking for a Database Administrator to join our team.  

Professional Level Information:
The Database Administrator aligns to the Engineer 1. Your duties may include assisting in the design, development, and testing of project components, identifying problems and discovering solutions, working on ongoing projects based on specifications or drawings, and collaborating with teams of other engineers. Typically performs multiple engineering-related tasks in various assignments within the project and firm. An Engineer 1 has strong technical skills and background, a knack for learning new technologies, and a blend of good problem-solving and innovation needed to resolve a wide variety of technical production challenges.

Responsibilities:

  • Monitor the EDW database environment and proactively manage and clean up disk space to maintain adequate capacity, system stability, and performance. Monitor database health, resource utilization, and capacity trends; conduct capacity planning to anticipate future data growth and system load and recommend appropriate scaling strategies.
  • Support Delivery Readiness Review (DRR) activities and production implementations, including moving approved database code to Production and implementing and troubleshooting Data Definition Language (DDL) scripts using SQL scripting. Ensure database changes are implemented in a controlled manner and properly documented in accordance with established change management procedures.
  • Develop, document, test, and implement database maintenance plans for scheduled and complex maintenance activities, including Oracle database time zone upgrades and related validation and rollback activities. Apply database software updates and patches in a timely and controlled manner, ensuring compatibility with the EDW environment and minimizing disruption to operations.
  • Troubleshoot slow-running SQL queries and database performance issues by analyzing execution plans, resource utilization, database waits, and other performance indicators; implement appropriate tuning and corrective actions. Conduct ongoing performance monitoring and tuning to identify and resolve bottlenecks and maintain database responsiveness, efficiency, and reliability.
  • Process database access requests in accordance with approved security procedures, including granting proxy access, creating database roles, assigning users to roles, and granting required table/object privileges to those roles. Implement and maintain database security controls, including appropriate access controls, encryption, and auditing mechanisms, to protect sensitive data and support compliance with VA and federal data protection requirements.
  • Perform schema refreshes and table refreshes between EDW environments, including coordinating refresh requirements, validating source and target objects, executing the refresh, resolving errors, and confirming successful completion.
  • Design and implement database schemas and models that support the efficient storage, retrieval, and analysis of data within the EDW. Ensure database designs align with project data governance and architectural standards.
  • Develop, maintain, and execute comprehensive database backup and recovery plans to safeguard data against loss or corruption. Conduct disaster recovery testing to validate backup strategies and ensure data can be restored within required recovery objectives.
  • Support the accuracy, consistency, and integrity of data within the EDW through appropriate database-level validation and integrity controls. Collaborate with data stewards, developers, and project teams to identify and address data quality issues.
  • Serve as a primary technical resource for database-related issues, providing expert troubleshooting and working with development teams to resolve database challenges associated with application design, implementation, and production operations.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of the database environment, including configurations, operational procedures, maintenance activities, security controls, and change management activities. Generate and communicate database health, performance, capacity, and optimization information as required.
  • Collaborate with developers, data analysts, project managers, and other project team members to ensure database services effectively support EDW project goals. Communicate database requirements, technical issues, risks, and recommendations effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Requirements:

  • Bachelors Degree in a technical Discipline, an additional 8 years of experience considered in lieu of degree.
  • 1+ years; experience in Data Warehousing.
  • Must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain the required security clearance.

Preferred/Desired:

  • Currently cleared for Public Trust at tier 2 moderate level or higher
  • Experience with troubleshooting Oracle GoldenGate replication issues and support data sync between source and target environments (preferred).
  • Experience in Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM) and Recovery Manager (RMAN)
  • Experience migrating Oracle database and BI tools from on premise to Cloud Environment
  • Experience implementing Oracle database performance tuning and improvement processes
  • Experience supporting OBIEE applications
