GovCIO is seeking a self-motivated Linux Administrator to support Linux servers and services for the 616th Operations Center (616 OC). The administrator will perform routine sustainment and troubleshooting independently, follow approved procedures for security and change control, and coordinate complex changes and incidents with senior engineers and mission partners. The environment includes Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), other Linux distributions as applicable, VMware-hosted systems, and restricted networks.
This position is located in San Antonio, TX and is onsite.
ResponsibilitiesThis is a hands-on position operating in a VMware-based enterprise environment. The successful candidate must be capable of independently owning the Linux environment, resolving complex technical issues, implementing secure and repeatable administrative processes, and serving as the primary escalation point for Linux-related systems and services. The position requires a self-starter who can operate with limited technical oversight, identify problems before they become operational impacts, develop solutions, and drive those solutions through implementation, validation, automation, and documentation.
- Install, configure, maintain, patch, and troubleshoot Linux servers using approved build standards, maintenance windows, and change procedures.
- Use Red Hat Satellite or comparable management tools to register hosts, maintain subscriptions and repositories, deploy approved patches, and check deployment results.
- Review vulnerability scans and Defense Information Systems Agency Security Technical Implementation Guide (DISA STIG) findings; apply approved operating system fixes, test results, and document exceptions for cybersecurity review.
- Monitor availability, services, logs, storage, capacity, and performance; identify emerging issues and open or update work tickets before customer impact.
- Troubleshoot common service, package, storage, network, authentication, certificate, and virtual machine issues; document findings and escalate issues that require architectural decisions or cross-team changes.
- Administer accounts, permissions, SSH, sudo, firewalls, scheduled jobs, backups, and system services in accordance with established procedures.
- Create or improve Bash scripts and use approved Ansible or comparable automation to reduce repetitive administration; test changes and maintain them in controlled repositories.
- Support Linux virtual machines in VMware vSphere/vCenter, including provisioning requests, guest tools, snapshots, resource checks, and coordination with virtualization administrators.
- Assist with server builds, operating system upgrades, migrations, restores, and decommissioning under approved plans and senior technical guidance as needed.
- Support Linux-hosted applications, including Elastic Stack and virtual desktop components when assigned; coordinate application-layer issues with service owners.
- Maintain accurate system records, standard operating procedures, troubleshooting notes, and evidence of patching and security remediation.
- Coordinate schedules, status, and handoffs with cybersecurity, networking, virtualization, application, and 616 OC customers.
QualificationsRequired qualifications High School with 9+ years (or commensurate experience)
Clearance Required: TS/SCI with NATO Secret
Required Skills and Experience
- DoD 8140 Information Assurance Technical Level II certification, such as CompTIA Security+ or approved equivalent, if required by the position.
- Hands-on production Linux administration experience, including recent RHEL experience and command-line troubleshooting.
- Working knowledge of systemd, logs, RPM and DNF/YUM, filesystems and LVM, TCP/IP and DNS, access controls, and basic recovery procedures.
- Experience performing Linux patching and implementing approved security baseline or vulnerability remediation.
- Experience using Red Hat Satellite or a comparable enterprise Linux management platform for host registration, content, and patch operations.
- Ability to write or maintain practical Bash scripts and use an automation tool such as Ansible, SaltStack, Puppet, or Chef.
- Experience supporting Linux virtual machines in VMware vSphere/vCenter or a comparable virtualization environment.
- Ability to prioritize assigned work, investigate routine production issues independently, communicate status, document results, and escalate appropriately.
Preferred qualifications- Red Hat Certified System Administrator certification or equivalent demonstrated Linux skills.
- Experience supporting Elastic Stack services or Omnissa Horizon Linux virtual desktops.
- Familiarity with DISA STIG tools, ACAS/Nessus, RMF documentation, and restricted or classified environments.
- Experience using Git, Python, or reusable Ansible playbooks for administration and reporting.
