Key Responsibilities

Network Engineer is responsible for the design, implementation, and 24/7 maintenance of the District’s transportation communication network.

  • ITS Infrastructure Support: Managing the fiber optic and wireless networks that connect traffic signals, CCTV cameras, and digital message boards across the District.

  • Network Security: Implementing firewalls and encryption to protect sensitive transportation data and prevent unauthorized access to traffic control systems.

  • Data Center Management: Maintaining the core network infrastructure within DDOT data centers, ensuring high availability and failover capabilities.

  • Troubleshooting: Diagnosing complex connectivity issues between field devices (like intersection controllers) and the central Traffic Management Center (TMC).

  • Vendor Coordination: Working with telecommunication providers and hardware vendors to upgrade aging copper lines to high-speed fiber.


### Technical Requirements & Skills

Candidates are typically expected to have a mix of standard networking expertise and specialized hardware knowledge.

CertificationsCCNP (Cisco Certified Network Professional) or JNCIP (Juniper) is often preferred.
ProtocolsDeep knowledge of BGP, OSPF, EIGRP, TCP/IP, and IPv6 transition strategies.
HardwareExperience with Cisco ISR/ASR routers, Nexus switches, and Palo Alto or Fortinet firewalls.
Field TechFamiliarity with Ruggedized/Industrial Ethernet switches used in outdoor cabinets.
EducationBachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.

### Preferred Qualifications for DDOT

Because this is a government role focused on public safety and mobility, certain "extras" stand out:

  • Experience with GIS: Understanding how network assets map to physical locations across D.C.’s eight wards.

  • Wireless Expertise: Knowledge of 5G/CBRS small cells and Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) for vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) technology.

  • Public Sector Experience: Familiarity with District government procurement processes and compliance standards (like NIST or FedRAMP).
