ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
A company is investing in a comprehensive CMDB transformation initiative and needs an experienced practitioner to drive it. This is not a support role — it is an ownership role. You will come in, assess the current state, define the path forward, and lead the implementation and stabilization of a ServiceNow CMDB environment that the broader organization depends on.
The right person for this engagement combines deep technical knowledge of ServiceNow CMDB and Discovery with the credibility and communication skills to align stakeholders, enforce governance, and build something that lasts beyond the project.
Industry-specific experience is not required. What matters is that you have done this before, can work independently, and know how to bring a complex organization along with you.
WHAT YOU'LL OWN
- Lead the end-to-end implementation, stabilization, and ongoing improvement of the CMDB — from current-state assessment through sustainable operating model
- Design and maintain CI models, attributes, and relationships aligned to the Common Service Data Model (CSDM)
- Own ServiceNow Discovery configuration and optimization — troubleshoot gaps, resolve conflicts, and ensure data integrity across all ingestion mechanisms
- Define and enforce CMDB governance: data standards, quality controls, CI lifecycle policies, and accountability frameworks
- Build the documentation layer — onboarding procedures, change and decommissioning processes, audit trails — so the program survives beyond this engagement
- Monitor CMDB health through regular audits, reconciliation, and reporting; identify and remediate duplicates, stale CIs, and data quality issues
- Collaborate directly with CI owners, infrastructure teams, application teams, and service owners to define requirements and establish clear accountability
- Enable downstream consumers of CMDB data — Change, Incident, Problem, ITOM, Reporting — and ensure data quality holds under that consumption
- Serve as the internal subject-matter expert and guide stakeholders toward operating models that are sustainable long-term
WHAT YOU BRING
- Hands-on experience leading a CMDB implementation or major stabilization effort in a complex enterprise environment — you have owned this, not supported it
- Deep working knowledge of ServiceNow CMDB and Discovery, including MID server configuration, credential management, pattern troubleshooting, and Service Mapping
- Practical understanding of CSDM and how it applies to CI model design decisions in real environments
- Experience building and enforcing CMDB governance — data standards, CI lifecycle documentation, accountability models — not just inheriting frameworks others built
- Demonstrated ability to manage CI ownership across infrastructure, application, and service owner teams, including when teams push back
- Strong communication skills — you can translate technical data quality requirements into business language that senior stakeholders act on
- ITIL foundation or higher preferred; prior exposure to ITOM, SAM/HAM, or Change Management integrations is a plus
WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE
Within 90 days, you have assessed the current environment, identified the highest-priority gaps, and have a clear, stakeholder-aligned roadmap in motion. Within six months, discovery is running cleanly, CI data quality is measurably improving, and governance is in place with accountable owners. The organization is no longer dependent on heroics to maintain CMDB accuracy — it has a process.
