Seize your opportunity to make a personal impact as a Network Administrator supporting the network infrastructure for LAN/WAN services at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) on behalf of the Center for Information Technology (CIT).
As a Network Administrator, you will help ensure today is safe and tomorrow is smarter by supporting a resilient, secure, and highly available NIH network infrastructure that enables the NIH community to advance science, research, and mission-critical work.

How a Network Administrator Will Make an Impact:

  • Leverage in-person and virtual connections to coordinate work actions to remove the IT burden from customers so they can focus on science
  • Contribute knowledge and experience to the collective technical community at NIH and support other IT professionals at the institute level
  • Work collaboratively with the CIT federal team and other service areas as ONE CIT in support of NIH
  • Help ensure network infrastructure and associated internet/intranet services maintain maximum uptime by responding quickly and thoroughly to incidents, requests, and outages
  • Apply networking expertise and evolving technologies to develop solutions in a fast-paced, highly collaborative federal enterprise environment that must remain secure, compliant, and supportive of scientific discovery

What You'll Need to Succeed:

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree
  • or
  • High school diploma with relevant experience and professional certification
  • CCNA or CCNP required

Required Experience:
  • Minimum 3 years of Network Administrator experience

Required Technical Skills:
  • Strong understanding of network protocols and switching (TCP/IP, FTP/HTTP, UDP, VPN, etc.)
  • Ability to read and decipher network topologies
  • Advanced troubleshooting of routers, switches, wireless access points, UPS systems, firewalls, and related network gear
  • Activate and configure switches, routers, NICs, LAN ports, etc.
  • Create network and telecom closet diagrams
  • Use network tools to diagnose, trace, and validate activity on LAN ports, network devices, and endpoints
  • Ability to analyze logs and network traffic

Security Clearance Level:

  • Must be able to obtain an NIH Public Trust

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs to rack and stack network equipment
  • Reliable transportation to respond to on-call emergencies within the DC-MD-VA area within defined response times
  • Meticulous documentation of work performed for review, recreation, and management reporting
  • Organized workspace and documentation practices
  • Ability to work effectively in team environments, both in-person and virtually
  • Strong sense of responsibility and ownership

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with monitoring tools (e.g., SiteScope, SolarWinds, ScienceLogic)
  • Experience with ServiceNow or Remedy
  • Experience with Infoblox

  • On customer site (no remote work)

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $40.00/hr.
