The Release Train Engineer (RTE) is a servant leader, coach, and facilitator responsible for enabling an Agile Release Train (ART) to deliver value effectively, predictably, and continuously. The RTE works across multiple Agile teams, Product Management, Architecture, and business stakeholders to align priorities, manage dependencies, improve flow, and foster a culture of continuous improvement.
Rather than directing work, the RTE enables teams and leaders to collaborate effectively, make informed decisions, remove impediments, and achieve desired business outcomes. The RTE serves as the primary facilitator of ART planning, coordination, execution, and learning while helping the organization adopt Lean-Agile principles and practices.
Key Responsibilities
Enable Agile Release Train Success
- Facilitate the delivery of value across a multi-team Agile Release Train.
- Foster alignment between business objectives, product strategy, architecture, and delivery execution.
- Create an environment that promotes collaboration, transparency, accountability, and continuous learning.
- Help teams identify and address systemic impediments that hinder flow and value delivery.
- Support effective escalation and resolution of risks, dependencies, and blockers.
Facilitate Program Increment (PI) Planning and Execution
- Facilitate PI Planning preparation and execution activities.
- Support Product Management and Business Owners in achieving planning readiness.
- Help teams identify, manage, and mitigate dependencies and risks.
- Facilitate alignment on PI Objectives and delivery commitments.
Monitor progress throughout the Program Increment and support adaptation when conditions change
Coordinate Cross-Team Delivery
- Facilitate collaboration across Agile teams, product teams, architecture, and business stakeholders.
- Support dependency management across multiple teams and value streams.
- Enable effective communication and decision-making across organizational boundaries.
- Maintain visibility into delivery progress and emerging risks.
- Promote practices that improve flow and reduce delays caused by dependencies.
Facilitate ART Events and Learning Cycles
- Facilitate ART ceremonies and synchronization events, including:
- PI Planning
- ART Sync
- Scrum of Scrums
- Product Management Syncs
- System Demos
- Inspect and Adapt Workshops
- Ensure learning and continuous improvement are embedded into the delivery process.
- Encourage data-driven conversations that focus on outcomes rather than activity.
Improve Flow and Predictability
- Monitor and facilitate improvements in:
- Cycle time
- Dependency management
- Predictability/Volatility
- Delivery health
- Quality outcomes
- Use delivery metrics to identify opportunities for improvement.
- Partner with teams to improve forecasting, planning effectiveness, and execution.
- Promote a culture of experimentation and continuous improvement.
Coach and Develop Agile Ways of Working
- Coach leaders, Product Managers, Scrum Masters, and Agile Teams on Lean-Agile principles.
- Support adoption of modern product delivery practices.
- Guide stakeholders in understanding and applying Agile planning and governance approaches.
- Foster servant leadership and collaborative decision-making.
- Help teams mature their Agile capabilities while maintaining focus on customer and business value.
Experience
- Demonstrated experience facilitating large-scale Agile delivery initiatives.
- Experience working across multiple Agile teams delivering complex business capabilities.
- Experience facilitating Program Increment (PI) Planning or equivalent large-scale planning events.
- Experience managing cross-team dependencies, risks, and organizational impediments.
- Experience partnering with business and technology stakeholders in complex environments.
- Experience supporting SAP, ERP, or enterprise transformation initiatives preferred.
