Job Title: Support System Administrator

Position Overview
The Support System Administrator supports migration and modernization of end-of-life (EOL) systems, including legacy Windows Server (2012 and older) and Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL 5/6/7). Focuses on upgrading to supported versions (Windows Server 2016/2019/2022/2025, RHEL 8/9) through reinstallation (primary) and in-place upgrades (last resort) to ensure security, performance, and operational continuity.
Key Responsibilities
System Assessment & Planning
- Assess legacy Windows Server (2012 and older) and RHEL 5/6/7 systems
- Prioritize migration based on criticality, security risks, operational needs
- Develop comprehensive migration strategy with risk assessments, upgrade paths, timelines
System Migration
- Migrate legacy systems to RHEL 8/9, Windows Server 2022/2025 via reinstallation (primary method)
- Plan/execute in-place upgrades only as last resort following best practices
- Implement data backup/recovery strategies to minimize data loss
- Validate post-upgrade functionality (performance, application compatibility, services, networking)
Configuration Management
- Reconfigure system services/settings (networking, storage, security) post-upgrade
- Use Ansible (RHEL) and PowerShell (Windows) for consistent configurations
- Develop automation scripts for repetitive tasks across Windows/Linux systems
Security Enhancements
- Perform system hardening on RHEL/Windows per CIS Benchmarks/NIST standards
- Apply security patches/updates, bringing legacy systems to current levels
- Run vulnerability scans, remediate issues during migration
- Ensure compliance with internal security policies/regulations
Troubleshooting & Support
- Escalate point for migration issues, especially legacy RHEL 5/6/Windows
- Provide post-migration support for system/performance/compatibility problems
- Troubleshoot OS-level and application issues ensuring high availability
Documentation & Reporting
- Document migration processes, configurations, issues/resolutions
- Update CMDB and TRP list with new OS/environment details
- Provide regular stakeholder progress reports on migration statmilestones
Collaboration & Training
- Coordinate with networking, database admins, application owners, vendors
- Communicate downtime/changes to end-users/stakeholders
- Create user manuals, conduct knowledge transfer for updated systems
Backup & Disaster Recovery
- Implement backup solutions for Windows/RHEL systems
- Update/test disaster recovery plans post-migration
Candidate Skills and Qualifications
- 8+ years RHEL and Windows OS administration, upgrade, and migration experience.
