Title: Remote RPG Developer (Legacy Systems Modernization)-W2
Location: Remote (U.S. Based)
Employment Type: W-2 Contract; 6 months with possible extensions.
Overview
Client is seeking an experienced RPG Developer to support a strategic legacy system assessment and modernization initiative for a Fortune 500 client in the retail industry. This role is focused primarily on analyzing existing RPG applications, understanding business processes, documenting system functionality, and supporting planning efforts for a transition to a modern Java-based architecture.
This opportunity is ideal for someone who enjoys working in legacy environments, uncovering how systems operate, and building the documentation and technical understanding needed to support modernization efforts. While some maintenance and support work may be required, the primary focus is analysis, research, documentation, and transition planning rather than extensive day-to-day development.
Key Responsibilities
- Analyze and research legacy applications developed in RPG within an IBM iSeries (AS/400) environment.
- Collaborate with business and technical stakeholders to understand current system workflows, processes, and dependencies.
- Document application functionality, business rules, integrations, data flows, and operational processes.
- Support discovery and assessment activities for migration and modernization initiatives.
- Provide detailed insights into DB2 data structures, relationships, and application interactions.
- Assist with troubleshooting, maintenance, and limited enhancements to existing systems as needed.
- Work closely with business analysts, architects, and modernization teams to support strategic planning and execution.
- Identify opportunities to improve documentation, system understanding, and transition readiness.
Required Qualifications
- Strong experience developing and supporting applications using RPG III, RPG IV, and/or RPG ILE.
- Hands-on experience working in IBM iSeries (AS/400) environments.
- Solid understanding of DB2 databases.
- Experience analyzing, researching, and documenting legacy applications and business processes.
- Ability to translate technical findings into clear, well-structured documentation for both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Strong communication, analytical, and collaboration skills.
- Experience working directly with business stakeholders to gather requirements and understand operational workflows.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience within retail or other high-volume transaction-based environments.
- Understanding of application modernization initiatives and legacy-to-modern platform migrations.
- Familiarity with system integration concepts and data migration processes.
- Exposure to Java-based architectures or modernization programs is a plus.
