Role Overview

Sallie Mae is seeking a Senior UI/UX Designer who is a bold, creative problem solver passionate about designing intuitive, customer centered digital experiences. As Sallie Mae continues its transformation into a comprehensive education services company, this role will help shape seamless, meaningful digital journeys for students-from planning and financing education to long term success beyond graduation.

You will work closely with cross functional partners including product, engineering, research, content, and business stakeholders to deliver high quality design solutions across web, mobile, tablet, and app platforms.

Key Responsibilities

Product Design & Experience Development

  • Lead end to end design efforts from concept through implementation
  • Translate research insights, competitive analysis, and UX best practices into user centered experiences
  • Produce journey maps, wireframes, user flows, interactive prototypes, and high fidelity designs
  • Deliver detailed design documentation and specifications for development teams
  • Partner with developers to ensure design intent is accurately implemented
  • Advocate for customer needs throughout the product development lifecycle

Design Systems & Standards

  • Contribute to and enhance Sallie Mae's internal design system in Figma
  • Maintain visual and interaction consistency across platforms and products
  • Document reusable patterns, components, and guidelines
  • Apply systematic thinking to solve complex design challenges

Research & Strategy

  • Conduct competitive and industry research
  • Identify opportunities to improve consumer experiences
  • Support heuristic evaluations, A/B testing, and design validation
  • Participate in stakeholder interviews and business walkthrough

Collaboration & Communication

  • Collaborate closely with UX research, content strategists, and copywriters
  • Present design solutions to stakeholders and executives with clear rationale
  • Communicate effectively with both technical and non technical audiences
  • Facilitate alignment and decision making across disciplines

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience
  • 5+ years of experience in UX design, UI design, interaction design, or digital product design
  • Advanced proficiency in Figma and Adobe Creative Suite
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating complex, multi platform design work
  • Excellent visual design skills with knowledge of accessibility standards
  • Experience documenting complex interactions for development teams
  • Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills
  • Ability to collaborate across teams and organizational levels
  • Self starter with strong time management and delivery skills
  • Growth mindset and openness to learning new tools and methodologies

Nice to Have Skills

  • Experience in financial services or education technology
  • Familiarity with design thinking methodologies
  • Experience working within agile development environments
  • Background in conversion optimization and/or e commerce
