We are looking for System Administrator for our client which is an University in Ithaca, NY. USA.
Systems Administrator with a broad base of IT expertise to join the IT team at the Lab of Ornithology (the Lab), which supports research, administrative, and outreach initiatives.
The Systems Administrator will take primary ownership for several central Lab IT services and provide guidance and support for the desktop IT team responsible for the remainder of the IT services. The Systems Administrator will serve as a technical resource for a broad range of engineering teams and stakeholders across the organization. Some services may require 24/7 on-call support.
The Systems Administrator will work collaboratively to deploy horizontally scalable, highly available, standardized service, storage, backup and application platforms.
Specifically, this position is focused on: operating systems, virtualization, networking, SAN-NAS storage, university hosting environments, and cloud technologies. The Systems Administrator is responsible for diagnosing and troubleshooting high level technical problems, gathering and analyzing operational data, securing, and providing both tactical and strategic advice for the services they have primary responsibility for.
This role will facilitate utilization of services by creating end-user documentation and performing training, implement new services, and develop the Lab s best practices in accordance to IT policies.
Lab IT services supported by the Systems Administrator include:
- Endpoint management develop and maintain standardized operating system and application configurations using provided configuration management tools (SSCCM, JAMF)
- Storage administration Storage Area Network allocation management; connectivity; cross platform accessibility; capacity planning; performance metrics; disaster recover support; replication
- Server administration Windows Server administration; file and print services; database and services; provisioning; patching and upgrading; VMware integration; storage infrastructure integration
- Cloud technologies provide additional support for DevOps processes and numerous cloud-based applications, ranging from data storage, big data analysis, cloud infrastructure and billing.
- Virtual servers and infrastructure VMware host management including operations, upgrades and patching, load balancing, storage integration; VMware guest management including capacity planning, provisioning, conversion, migration
- Media archive hardware and software support for media-based workflows for media editing, transcoding, and archival.
- Perform all procedures necessary to ensure the safety of information systems assets and to protect systems from intentional or inadvertent access or destruction.
- Must have in-depth expertise in the following areas:
- a) virtual server infrastructures;
- b) SAN and NAS administration;
- c) network and firewall administration, including DHCP, DNS, VPN.
- Must have proven diagnostic and problem-solving skills solving computer hardware, software, and network issues.
- Experience with cloud computing environments, preferably Amazon Web Services.
- Effective, proven customer service skills.
- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills; adherence to all confidentiality requirements.
- Ability to understand and communicate technical information in non-technical terms.
- Strong organizational skills and demonstrated ability to pay close attention to detail.
