Job Description
We are seeking an Environmental Scientist 1 to support water quality monitoring and environmental compliance initiatives within the Division of Water Resources. This role will work closely with environmental field office staff, regulatory teams, and local stakeholders to help protect public health, surface water quality, and drinking water systems across a multi-county service area.
Key Responsibilities
- Collect chemical, bacteriological, and biological surface water samples to assess stream health and water quality.
- Perform sanitary surveys of community and non-community public water systems to ensure compliance with state and federal drinking water regulations.
- Serve as a point of contact for water system operators, landowners, consultants, and local stakeholders regarding regulatory compliance and environmental concerns.
- Travel frequently to monitoring sites and public water systems across a 17-county service area using a state-provided vehicle.
- Maintain accurate field records, prepare reports, and enter data into digital systems and databases.
- Participate in investigations related to illegal discharges, water quality concerns, and drinking water complaints.
- Collaborate with internal teams, public officials, consultants, and community members to support environmental protection initiatives.
- Conduct fieldwork in rural locations, construction sites, and outdoor environments under varying weather conditions.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Physics, Meteorology, Wildlife Biology, or a related field.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience with data entry, documentation, and technical reporting.
- Ability to read and interpret maps and create diagrams.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a field-based environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with chemical sampling and laboratory analysis procedures.
- Knowledge of macrobenthic invertebrate sampling and identification.
- Familiarity with environmental compliance and water quality regulations.
- Experience conducting field investigations and environmental assessments.
