Position: Systems Safety Engineer

Location: Woodland, CA

About the Role

As a Systems Safety Engineer III, you will help ensure the safety and reliability of complex systems throughout the product lifecycle. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams to identify hazards, assess risks, and integrate safety considerations into system and software designs. You will contribute to certification and compliance activities while supporting the development of safety-critical products.

Responsibilities

Apply system safety engineering principles, methodologies, and best practices to identify, evaluate, and mitigate hazards throughout the development lifecycle.

Support the development, verification, and certification of hardware and software systems in accordance with applicable industry standards, including DO-178 and DO-254.

Perform and document safety analyses, including PHA, FHA, SHA, SSHA, FTA, bent pin analysis, and software system safety assessments.

Identify potential safety risks, recommend mitigation strategies, and collaborate with engineering teams to implement effective solutions.

Develop, review, maintain, and approve safety requirements, safety analyses, and related engineering documentation.

Track hazards through a closed-loop hazard tracking process and ensure timely resolution of identified issues.

Partner with systems, hardware, software, quality, and test engineering teams to incorporate safety requirements into product development activities.

Communicate technical findings, project status, and risk assessments to stakeholders, program teams, and leadership.

Support continuous improvement of safety engineering processes, methodologies, and tools.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.

Experience applying system safety engineering principles and methodologies in accordance with industry and military standards such as MIL-STD-882.

Experience performing safety analyses, including Preliminary Hazard Analysis (PHA), Functional Hazard Analysis (FHA), System Hazard Analysis (SHA), Subsystem Hazard Analysis (SSHA), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), and Software System Safety Analysis (SSSA).

Experience supporting hardware and software development programs utilizing standards such as DO-178 and/or DO-254.

Understanding of systems engineering processes, including requirements development, architecture, design, implementation, integration, verification, and validation.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate across cross-functional teams.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with safety and certification standards and methodologies, including MIL-STD-882, DO-178B/C, DO-248, DO-254, ARP4754, ARP4761, and MIL-HDBK-516C.

Familiarity with requirements management, systems modeling, and lifecycle management tools such as DOORS, Cameo, Windchill, JIRA, Confluence, or similar platforms.

Experience working in Agile development environments.

Experience with Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE).

Experience developing or reviewing Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and/or Failure Modes, Effects, and Criticality Analysis (FMECA).
