About the Role

Our client, a well-established US multi-brand retail and eCommerce company, is looking for a skilled Microsoft Database Developer on a contract basis. You will design, build and maintain the database solutions that power their retail and eCommerce operations.

Reporting to the Vice President of Data Architecture & Machine Learning, you will work within a live Azure data environment. The work includes modifying stored procedures and schemas across multiple databases and maintaining the data integration processes that support reporting, transactional systems and downstream analytics.

Key Responsibilities

• Database development: Design, develop and maintain relational databases, schemas and objects on Microsoft SQL Server and Azure SQL Database.
• T-SQL: Write, optimize and troubleshoot complex T-SQL queries, stored procedures, functions, views and triggers.
• ETL/ELT: Build and maintain data pipelines using SSIS and Azure Data Factory to move and transform data across systems.
• Azure Functions: Maintain and occasionally extend a small number of Azure Functions used for data movement and integration.
• Automation: Develop PowerShell and Python scripts for ETL, database maintenance, deployments and monitoring.
• Performance tuning: Improve database performance through indexing strategy, query plan analysis and resource optimization.
• Security and recovery: Support database security, backup/recovery and disaster recovery in line with enterprise policies.
• Reporting: Build and maintain reports and dashboards in SSRS and Power BI, including data model and DAX support for BI developers.
• Documentation: Document database designs, data flows and standard operating procedures.

Required Skills & Experience

• 12+ years of experience developing and administering Microsoft SQL Server databases in a production environment.
• Strong proficiency in T-SQL, including query optimization and performance tuning.
• Hands-on experience building ETL/ELT pipelines with SSIS and Azure Data Factory, including data feeds for marketing, personalization and customer analytics platforms.
• Experience with SSRS for reporting.
• Experience with Azure data services such as Azure SQL Database or Azure Synapse.
• Experience automating database tasks with PowerShell and/or Python.
• Working knowledge of Power BI (data modeling, DAX, report and dashboard development).
• Solid understanding of data modeling, normalization and database design best practices.
• Fluent in written and spoken English.
