Summary

People who are blind or have low vision can access text and sometimes images using a Refreshable Braille Display, which dynamically raises and lowers tactile dots on a surface. Apple's VoiceOver screen reader supports using Refreshable Braille Displays via USB or Bluetooth on many Apple platforms including iOS, macOS, watchOS, and visionOS. The Braille Accessibility team is responsible for all Braille-related support in VoiceOver, ranging from low-level drivers through high-level features to customize the user experience specifically for Braille.

Description

At Apple we believe that technology is most powerful when it empowers everyone. Our team is seeking a Software Engineer to improve and enhance the accessibility of Apple products for all users, regardless of their abilities. The ideal candidate will be a motivated software engineer, eager to learn and contribute meaningfully to the lives of our users.

On the Braille Accessibility team, you'll work across the whole stack to ensure a great experience for Braille users, ranging from low-level drivers, to translating between print text and braille, all the way through helping to ensure that user interfaces on Apple platforms are fully accessible to Braille users.

Sometimes the best way to solve a problem will be to debug it across the whole platform. We need someone who won't be afraid to dive into app code, system frameworks or third-party libraries order to find the root cause and deliver the best user experience.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor of Science in Computer Science or equivalent

3+ years of relevant work experience

Proficient in Swift, Objective-C, C++, Java or another systems language

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with accessibility and assistive technologies (experience with Braille would be a plus)

Experience with Objective-C and/or Swift, and developing on Apple platforms

Experience with both low-level systems code (e.g. byte manipulation and IPCs) and frontend code.

Excitement to build software that makes a tangible difference in people's lives
