Our client, a leading Engineering Consulting firm, is looking for a talented Electrical Department Manager to join their team on a full-time basis. This role is ideal for an experienced electrical engineering leader who is passionate about mentoring and team development. The position combines lead electrical engineer and project management responsibilities with oversight of a 15-person engineering and design team, including workload management, mentoring, recruiting, and retention. This is a hybrid role in San Jose, and the salary range is $160,000 - $190,000 annually.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conduct annual performance reviews for department staff
- Lead recruiting efforts, including interviewing and hiring recommendations
- Review and negotiate contracts and terms and conditions with oversight from Corporate
- Manage staff assignments and allocate resources to meet project schedules
- Prepare accurate meeting minutes and track action items to completion
- Develop fee proposals and define project scopes of work
- Establish, implement, and maintain quality assurance standards
- Supervise electrical design production and ensure compliance with QA/QC procedures
- Assign electrical project management and supporting engineering roles for new projects
- Lead weekly staff meetings to communicate assignments and balance workloads
- Mentor, train, evaluate, promote, and, when necessary, terminate department staff
- Develop and maintain training programs and professional development resources
- Serve as Lead Electrical Project Engineer or Project Manager, as required
- Manage project financials in coordination with internal accounting teams
- Submit plans to applicable plan check agencies and obtain required approvals
- Review contractor submittals, respond to RFIs, and perform construction observations
- Prepare detailed electrical designs, including calculations and technical specifications
- Communicate directly with clients through presentations, proposals, and project meetings
- Conduct job site investigations and field observations during construction
- Prepare Due Diligence, Feasibility, and Basis of Design reports and demonstrate strong project management capabilities.
In addition, the role requires proven expertise in electrical engineering, including:
- Design and selection of power, lighting, and low-voltage systems
- Completion of project tasks within established design budgets
- Coordination of electrical equipment with architectural and structural designs, as well as with in-house mechanical and plumbing engineers
- Collaboration with equipment vendors and suppliers to evaluate and select equipment
- Recognition as a technical expert with a self-motivated approach to staying current with industry trends and advancements
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum of 12 years of direct experience with a consulting or design-build electrical engineering firm
- Strong knowledge of applicable codes, standards, and construction and engineering processes
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with strong computer proficiency, including electrical engineering analysis software, Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, and Revit
- Professional Electrical Engineer (PE) license preferred
- LEED accreditation desired
- Proven project management experience required
- Demonstrated experience directly supervising and managing support staff required
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- May be tasked with lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling up to 25 lbs., if able to do so.
- Must be able to sit for prolonged periods of time and walk/stand for moderate periods of time.
- Must be able to bend at the knees and waist frequently
- Must be able to repetitively use a telephone and a computer mouse and keyboard.
