Job Description

The School of Law and Gallagher Law Libraryhave an outstanding opportunity for an Assistant Director of Law IT to join their team.

Position Purpose
This position serves as the Assistant Director of Law IT for the University of Washington School of Law and Gallagher Law Library, reporting directly to the Director of Law IT. The position also serves as the primary learning technologist for the School of Law, assisting instructors with integrating W.H. Gates Hall classroom technology into their teaching in effective ways. Finally, the position serves as secondary system administrator for both classroom and traditional technology systems operated by Law IT.

As Assistant Director they will provide support to the Director in setting priorities for the unit, working with the administration to institute technology-related policies and upgrades for the School of Law and Law Library, managing the unit's budget, managing the Law IT team, and overseeing the technology used in classroom, conference, and event spaces. As primary Learning Technologist they will take point in helping Law School instructors and event coordinators integrate UW and Law School learning technology into their classes and events. Examples include effectively recording classes and presentations, using touchscreen tools for markup and digital whiteboarding, and exploring online/hybrid teaching tools. Teaching tools used outside of scheduled classes will also be supported, such as how to productively make use of the UW Canvas learning management system.

As secondary System Administrator they may assist with performing a variety of complex computer system related activities including scripting, systems analysis, database administration, complex report development, and system security management. This position may perform technical evaluation, installation, maintenance, and support of all computer systems software, including managing integration of third-party solutions with UW Law systems. They may provide detailed requirement analysis and recommendations for systems software and hardware acquisitions and/or upgrades and will develop, maintain, and evaluate systems documentation.

Position Complexities
This position requires excellent interpersonal and technical skills in order to assist instructors in integrating learning technology into their courses. This includes creating training materials and conducting regular training sessions for those with all levels of experience with W.H. Gates Hall classroom technology. As primary Learning Technologist, they will provide feedback to the Director of Law IT and Law School leadership regarding the state of the use of learning technology and strategies for updating Law School specific items, such as classroom technology, when necessary to improve the student experience and scholarship of the Law School. Team management skills are also necessary in order to manage the classroom support team, as well as provide overall team supervision when the Director is unavailable.

Impact to the University
This position assists instructors with more effectively integrating learning technology into their classes in order to improve students' University experience. This position also provides administration of and technical support for the various infrastructure, network, and database systems on which the School of Law systems operate. Faculty, staff, and students utilize these systems to drive the research and educational mission of the School of Law. With impacts on instruction, student experience, internal web-based tools, student admissions, library operations, faculty scholarship, etc., these duties are critical to the operation of the Law School and Law Library and their role within the larger University.

Specific Responsibilities

Learning Technologist (45%)
o Train Law School faculty staff on use UW and Law School learning technology, both in person and with written and recording training materials
o Assist instructors in determining effective ways to integrate learning technology into their classes, both in and out of the classroom
o Manage classroom support team

Handle support requests (15%)
o Provide tier 1/2/3 support for learning technology requests
o Provide tier 2/3 support for application, server, and system administration requests
o Provide tier 3 end-user support for hardware and software on desktop, laptop, and mobile devices.

Unit management (10%)
o Work with Director to set priorities for the unit, plan and manage the unit budget, oversee classroom, conference, and event spaces, and manage the Law IT Help Desk

System administration (10%)
o Install and maintain server hardware (physical and virtual) and operating systems
o Help develop, install, and manage network services such as domain policy, virtual desktops, security patching, file sharing and printing; help manage Law School domain controllers and servers
o Coordinate with the Law IT team and UW-IT regarding network operations, shared computing resources, support standards and policies

Project management (10%)
o Meet with department managers regarding technology and computing needs; analyze, research and present solutions
o Maintain documentation of development progress, assess development obstacles, and identify actions necessary to keep development efforts on schedule
o Oversee the development of solutions for integrating school/library systems with other UW-IT and University systems

Maintain professional and technical knowledge (5%)
o Attend courses, workshops, and conferences; review current publications and online resources
o Research and explore emerging learning technologies, determining if/how they relate to Law School/Law Library systems, providing recommendations to the Director of Law IT and other IT staff as needed
o Create prototype and pilot projects to explore the integration of new learning technologies into existing systems

Supervisory and other duties as assigned (5%)
o Manage up to 2.0 FTE to support classroom technology, instructional activities, and events. As necessary assign tasks to Help Desk technicians in a lead capacity. Supervise the Law IT team when the Director is unavailable. Responsibilities may also include training new employees, as well as providing input to the Director when conducting team member performance evaluations.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelors Degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related field
3 years experience working with instructors and learning technology in higher education and administering Windows servers, desktops, and laptops in an enterprise Active Directory environment

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

Additional Qualifications
Team management experience
Experience with classroom AV technology hardware such as Crestron, Biamp, Shure, etc., including the tools necessary to configure and maintain such hardware
Experience in website and database administration
Experience scripting solutions using PowerShell
Experience in managing network services including: Active Directory, Remote Desktop Services, Hyper-V and VMWare virtualization, Internet Information Services, DNS, file sharing, and printing
Experience in hardware troubleshooting
Knowledge of desktop applications, such as Microsoft 365 apps, to provide training, technical support, and solutions
Excellent communication, time management, organizational, and communication skills
Ability to handle multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously, shifting priorities as needed
Experience building and maintaining relationships with external vendors and partners

Desired Qualifications
Experience scripting solutions using PowerShell
Experience with Microsoft Intune
Knowledge of development and administration languages, such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, .NET, and C#
Experience with relational databases and SQL queries/stored procedures
Experience administering content management systems such as Umbraco and Microsoft SharePoint
Experience in working with integrated systems ranging from front-end web user interfaces through to back-end database and system applications
