Job Title

Diesel Calibration & Dyno Emissions Test Engineer
Position Summary

We are seeking a Diesel Calibration & Dyno Emissions Test Engineer to support diesel engine development, certification testing, and dynamometer (dyno) operations. This individual will play a dual role, providing oversight of Development Fleet (DF) engine health while also supporting a major transition of dyno test systems from AutoTest to AVL PUMA.

The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of diesel engine calibration, emissions testing, data analysis, and test cell operations, along with software and scripting experience to support automation and process improvements. This role requires close collaboration with certification teams, dyno engineers, and vehicle evaluation teams to ensure engine durability, emissions compliance, and high-quality test data throughout the development lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
Development Fleet (DF) Engine Health Monitoring
  • Monitor the health and performance of Development Fleet (DF) engines throughout their testing lifecycle.
  • Analyze engine aging, emissions, and performance trends to identify potential issues before they impact certification or development activities.
  • Partner with certification and development teams to ensure engines are operating properly and producing valid, repeatable data.
  • Review long-term engine performance trends and provide recommendations for corrective actions when needed.
  • Provide day-to-day oversight of DF engine health across multiple test programs.
  • Support autonomous monitoring procedures and health assessment processes for engine fleets.
Dyno Emissions & Certification Testing Support
  • Support VPSE Dyno DF testing activities, including DF Task 1 and Task 2 programs.
  • Ensure engines and aftertreatment systems are functioning properly throughout emissions and durability testing.
  • Perform detailed reviews of emissions data, test results, and test reports to verify data validity and identify testing concerns.
  • Investigate test anomalies and work with cross-functional teams to drive issue resolution.
  • Support certification activities and collaborate closely with certification engineers to ensure successful test execution.
  • Drive closure of open testing and emissions-related issues with Vehicle Evaluation and Validation (VEV) teams.
Test Automation & Software Transition Support
  • Support the diesel dyno team's transition from legacy AutoTest systems to AVL PUMA test automation platforms.
  • Assist with development, modification, and maintenance of automated test procedures.
  • Utilize scripting and software development skills to improve test efficiency and automation capabilities.
  • Develop tools and processes to support data collection, analysis, and reporting.
  • Work with test engineering teams to identify opportunities for automation and process improvement.
  • Provide technical support and troubleshooting during implementation of new test systems.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field.
  • Experience supporting diesel engine calibration, emissions testing, engine development, or dynamometer testing.
  • Understanding of diesel engine systems, combustion, emissions control systems, and aftertreatment technologies.
  • Experience reviewing and analyzing engine test data and emissions results.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience working with cross-functional engineering teams.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with AVL PUMA, AVL test systems, or similar dynamometer automation platforms.
  • Experience with AutoTest or other legacy dyno control systems.
  • Programming or scripting experience using:
    • Python
    • MATLAB
    • Camayo/CAMEO or similar automation tools
  • Understanding of emissions certification processes and regulatory testing requirements.
  • Experience with data acquisition systems, automated testing, and reporting tools.
  • Familiarity with durability, aging, and emissions development testing.
Key Skills
  • Diesel Engine Calibration
  • Emissions Testing & Analysis
  • Dynamometer Testing
  • Development Fleet Monitoring
  • Engine Health Analytics
  • AVL PUMA
  • Test Automation
  • Python Scripting
  • MATLAB
  • Root Cause Analysis
  • Data Trending & Reporting
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Certification Testing Support
  • Problem Solving & Process Improvement
Preferred Experience
  • 3+ years of experience supporting diesel engine development, calibration, certification, or emissions testing environments.
