Then come work for ICF, where we combine passion for our work with industry expertise and innovative analytics to produce compelling results that help solve some of the world's most challenging problems. ICF is a leader in helping public- and private-sector clients develop practical energy strategies and implement durable solutions that improve efficiency, flexibility, decarbonization outcomes, and long-term performance. To support our growth, we are hiring a Senior Energy Consultant to join our Energy Analytics and Consulting team. This role is best suited for a seasoned individual contributor with a strong area of specialization who can work with limited direction, independently lead technical workstreams, solve problems of diverse scope, and deliver high-quality client-ready analysis.

The Senior Energy Consultant will contribute to complex analytical and consulting assignments related to building energy modeling, flexible load management, distributed energy resources, decarbonization, and utility planning. This person will combine technical depth, sound judgment, client communication, and practical project execution skills while helping strengthen team capability and delivery quality.

Why you will love working here:
  • Quality of life: Flexible workplace arrangements and work-life balance
  • Investment in the community: Donation matching and volunteer opportunities
  • Investment in you: Tuition reimbursement, professional development resources, 401(k) matching, and Employee Stock Purchase Plan
  • And many more benefits. Ask your recruiter for details.

What you will be doing:
  • Lead technical tasks and workstreams using residential and commercial building energy modeling to answer client questions related to flexible load management, distributed energy resources, electrification, decarbonization, and energy efficiency.
  • Conduct energy efficiency, load shape, and decarbonization analyses using large-scale building energy modeling frameworks and relevant datasets, including approaches based on tools such as NREL's ResStock and ComStock.
  • Develop, apply, and refine analytical frameworks, calculations, and scenario analyses using Excel, Python, R, and related tools to support utility planning, program design, and regulatory or client advisory work.
  • Manage and analyze large datasets, evaluate results, validate assumptions, and help ensure technical accuracy, consistency, and quality in deliverables.
  • Independently interact with clients on technical topics, task progress, work products, and schedules, and organize complex ideas for clear communication to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Prepare and co-author reports, technical memoranda, presentations, white papers, and other client-facing materials that are accurate, clear, and tailored to the audience.
  • Contribute to distributed energy resource potential studies, utility program planning, regulatory support, and related strategic consulting assignments for utilities and government clients.
  • Apply project management methods and tools to plan and coordinate assigned tasks, manage priorities, and support delivery of projects on time and on budget.
  • Identify practical improvements to methods, workflows, and tools that increase rigor, efficiency, repeatability, and usability across projects.
  • Support business growth by identifying follow-on opportunities with current clients, contributing to proposal efforts, and helping shape next steps for future work.
  • Provide guidance, informal mentorship, and day-to-day support to junior staff on technical approaches, work quality, and professional development while remaining primarily an individual contributor.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Architectural, or Electrical Engineering, Building Science, Energy Management, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of demonstrated professional experience in the energy industry, energy consulting, building energy modeling, or a related technical field.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and strong capability with advanced Excel and quantitative analysis workflows.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Mechanical, Architectural, or Electrical Engineering, Building Science, Energy Management, or a related field.
  • Solid understanding of building energy use, heat transfer, building systems, and energy modeling principles in residential and commercial applications.
  • Experience performing analytical work of diverse scope where evaluation of data, assumptions, and clearly identified factors is required to develop sound solutions.
  • Ability to work under limited direction, exercise good judgment, and independently determine effective approaches to routine and moderately complex assignments.
  • Experience working effectively on project teams while taking ownership of individual tasks and maintaining high standards for quality, ethics, and collaboration.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present technical information clearly and persuasively.
  • Experience with building energy modeling tools such as OpenStudio, EnergyPlus, or similar platforms.
  • Experience with distributed energy resources, flexible load management, demand response, electrification, decarbonization, or utility program analytics.
  • Experience using Python, R, or similar tools for data transformation, automation, scenario analysis, optimization, or statistical applications.
  • Experience with utility planning, cost-effectiveness analysis, technical resource manuals, engineering calculations, or regulatory support.
  • Knowledge of building construction methods, mechanical systems, energy codes, and relevant standards for residential and commercial buildings.
  • Demonstrated ability to build productive relationships with internal peers, clients, and subject matter experts, and to gain cooperation around technical recommendations.
  • Experience supporting proposals, solution development, conference papers, white papers, or other market-facing technical content.
  • Track record of proactively supporting junior team members through coaching, feedback, and knowledge sharing.
