Key Responsibilities
Virtualization Platform Operations
- Administer, maintain, and optimize enterprise virtualization environments, including VMware vSphere / ESXi / vCenter and Nutanix AHV / Prism.
- Support compute, storage, networking, clustering, high availability, and disaster recovery capabilities across virtualized environments.
- Monitor platform health, performance, capacity, and availability.
- Troubleshoot complex virtualization, server, storage, and network-related issues.
Upgrade Planning and Execution
- Lead virtualization platform upgrade initiatives from planning through execution.
- Develop upgrade plans, implementation runbooks, rollback plans, and validation checklists.
- Coordinate with application, database, security, network, storage, and business teams to ensure readiness.
- Validate that supported applications and workloads are compatible with the upgraded platform.
- Identify upgrade risks, dependencies, impacts, and required remediation activities.
- Drive post-upgrade testing, issue resolution, and operational handoff.
Application and Workload Validation
- Partner with application owners to understand business-critical workloads and technical dependencies.
- Confirm application compatibility with new hypervisor versions, guest OS versions, VMware Tools, Nutanix Guest Tools, drivers, firmware, and backup agents.
- Track validation status across application portfolios.
- Escalate risks where applications are unsupported, outdated, or not certified on the target platform.
Platform Evaluation and Strategy
- Assist in evaluating alternative virtualization platforms if the organization decides to move away from VMware, Nutanix, or current-state solutions.
- Participate in technical assessments, proof-of-concepts, migration planning, and platform comparison activities.
- Evaluate options based on cost, scalability, operational fit, application compatibility, licensing, supportability, automation, security, and migration complexity.
- Provide practical recommendations to leadership and architecture teams.
Technical Leadership and Ownership
- Drive assigned initiatives independently with limited direction.
- Ask thoughtful technical and business questions to clarify scope, risks, and success criteria.
- Create clear documentation, decision summaries, status updates, and implementation plans.
- Communicate effectively with technical teams, application owners, vendors, and leadership.
- Mentor junior engineers and help establish operational best practices.
