Lead BI & Analytics Engineer (Power BI – Operations)
Location: Remote (MST hours required), Denver, CO (Occasionly)
Employment Type: (Contract)
Rate: $65/hr on c2c
Overview
We are seeking a Lead BI & Analytics Engineer to own end-to-end Operations analytics,
with primary responsibility for Power BI dashboards, metric integrity, and analytics reliability.
A key part of this role is inheriting, stabilizing, and improving existing Power BI
dashboards. You will step into an environment with live, business-critical analytics already in
use—some well-built, some not—and take full ownership of making them accurate, consistent,
performant, and trusted.
This role carries full lifecycle accountability: from understanding ambiguous operational
questions, through validating inherited logic, to deploying production-ready analytics and
supporting them over time.
This is not a greenfield-only or report-builder role. It requires judgment, technical leadership,
and comfort operating in a messy, real-world Operations environment.
Core Responsibilities
End-to-End Analytics Ownership
● Own analytics delivery end-to-end for Operations reporting, including:
○ Requirements discovery and clarification
○ Inheriting and validating existing dashboards and metrics
○ Data sourcing, modeling, and DAX logic
○ Data validation against source systems
○ Dashboard design, usability, and performance
○ Deployment, access control, and ongoing operational support
● Act as the single point of accountability for analytics correctness, consistency, and
trust.
Dashboard Inheritance, Stabilization & Evolution
● Inherit existing Power BI dashboards and:
○ Audit metric definitions, calculations, and assumptions
○ Identify and resolve data quality, logic, and trust issues
○ Improve performance, structure, and maintainability
○ Standardize metrics across dashboards and reporting cycles
● Refactor, simplify, or rebuild dashboards where necessary to meet production standards.
● Balance stabilizing legacy analytics with delivering new dashboards as Operations
needs evolve.
Power BI & Analytics Leadership
● Lead the design, build, maintenance, and evolution of Operations dashboards using
Power BI.
● Define and enforce standards for:
○ KPI definitions and calculation logic
○ Data model structure and grain
○ Visualization and usability
● Ensure dashboards are production-grade and support real operational decision-making.
Data Modeling, Validation & Trust
● Own Power BI data models end-to-end, ensuring:
○ Correct relationships and grain
○ Clear semantic layers
○ Performance at scale
● Validate dashboard outputs using SQL and structured reconciliation against backend
sources.
● Partner with upstream data teams to request, shape, and consume analytics-ready
datasets.
Environment, Deployment & Governance
● Own Power BI environments end-to-end:
○ Workspace strategy
○ Dev / Test / Prod separation
○ Deployment pipelines or equivalent promotion practices
● Define and maintain row-level security (RLS) and access control patterns.
● Establish governance practices that ensure accuracy and consistency without slowing
delivery.
Stakeholder Partnership & Direction
● Serve as the primary analytics partner for Operations leadership.
● Translate ambiguous operational questions into clear, actionable analytics solutions.
● Manage competing priorities between stabilizing inherited dashboards and delivering
new analytics.
● Set expectations, push back when needed, and communicate clearly around tradeoffs
and timelines.
Lead-Level Influence
● Provide technical guidance and review for other BI or analytics contributors when
applicable.
● Set standards and best practices for Operations analytics.
● Raise overall analytics maturity through documentation, coaching, and example-setting.
Required Qualifications
● 8+ years of experience in BI, analytics engineering, or data visualization roles.
● Proven experience owning end-to-end analytics delivery, including inheriting and
improving existing dashboards.
● Deep hands-on expertise with:
○ Power BI report development
○ Data modeling
○ DAX
○ Workspace and environment management
● Strong SQL skills with demonstrated experience validating BI outputs against source
systems.
● Track record of stabilizing and improving legacy or inherited analytics in production
environments.
● Comfortable working with imperfect, multi-source operational data.
● Strong stakeholder communication skills and confidence operating autonomously.
● Availability during Mountain Standard Time (MST) working hours.
Preferred Qualifications
● Experience acting as a functional or technical lead for analytics.
● Exposure to Sigma Computing (not required).
● Familiarity with Azure-based data platforms (ADLS, Databricks, Synapse) as an
analytics consumer.
● Experience with Power BI deployment pipelines, CI/CD concepts, or Azure DevOps.
● Background supporting Operations, Finance, or executive reporting in complex
environments.
Why This Role
This role exists to take ownership of what already exists and make it better.
Operations relies on live dashboards today. Some need refinement, some need correction, and
some need to be rethought entirely. This role owns that reality—by inheriting dashboards,
restoring trust, and evolving analytics to support how Operations actually runs.
You don’t just build new dashboards.
You own inherited ones end-to-end.
