Senior Embedded Software Engineer Medical Imaging / Ultrasound
Location: Remote U.S. West Coast preferred; exceptional candidates from across the U.S. may be considered
Job Type: Contract
Job Summary
We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Embedded Software Engineer to develop and enhance software for advanced medical imaging systems. The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on expertise in C/C++, embedded software development, Windows-based applications, and hardware-software integration.
Experience with ultrasound, IVUS, medical imaging, or other diagnostic imaging platforms is highly preferred.
This position requires an engineer who can independently own technical work packages from requirements and detailed design through implementation, integration, testing, documentation, and knowledge transfer.
Key Responsibilities
- Own embedded software work packages and deliver technical outcomes with limited supervision.
- Develop, enhance, and maintain Windows-based C/C++ software for embedded and hardware-interfacing applications.
- Create detailed software designs, interface specifications, implementation plans, and engineering documentation.
- Integrate software with electronics, PCBA, FPGA-based systems, embedded processors, peripheral devices, and low-level communication libraries.
- Support signal acquisition and data-conversion workflows used in medical imaging systems.
- Develop and maintain manufacturing test software, diagnostic utilities, automated test capabilities, and test-fixture applications.
- Perform software integration, debugging, defect resolution, root-cause analysis, and technical risk mitigation.
- Support backward compatibility and controlled migration when hardware components or interfaces are replaced.
- Collaborate with systems, electronics, FPGA, manufacturing, verification, quality, and program teams.
- Translate system requirements into detailed software designs, implementation tasks, and traceable engineering outputs.
- Prepare technical documentation, training materials, walkthroughs, and structured knowledge-transfer sessions.
- Communicate project status, technical risks, dependencies, decisions, and recovery actions clearly to stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Embedded Systems, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field.
- Strong hands-on experience with C and C++.
- Senior-level experience in embedded software development or closely related product engineering.
- Experience developing software in a Windows environment.
- Strong understanding of embedded systems and hardware-software integration.
- Experience integrating software with FPGA systems, embedded processors, custom electronics, or device interfaces.
- Strong knowledge of software architecture, object-oriented design, multithreading, memory management, and performance-sensitive programming.
- Experience with software debugging, root-cause analysis, defect resolution, and integration testing.
- Ability to independently plan, execute, and deliver complex technical work packages.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience developing software for ultrasound, IVUS, medical imaging, diagnostic imaging, or medical-device platforms.
- Experience with Philips Ultrasound or comparable medical imaging platforms.
- Familiarity with ACE Embedded Software / ACE Library or comparable embedded software frameworks.
- Experience with FPGA-based systems, including Xilinx or comparable platforms.
- Experience with low-level hardware abstraction layers, device libraries, drivers, or embedded communication stacks.
- Experience developing manufacturing test software, automated test systems, diagnostic applications, or test fixtures.
- Experience with medical-device software development and regulated product-development processes.
- Knowledge of software design controls, traceability, verification, validation, and controlled documentation.
- Experience with ASIC/electronic component obsolescence, component replacement, or product-continuity initiatives.
- Familiarity with Conan or comparable C/C++ dependency and package-management systems.
- Experience developing structured technical documentation and knowledge-transfer plans.
