Senior Web Designer
Introduction:
The University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine is hiring a Senior Web Designer to participate in and lead the design, development, layout, and coding of a newly developed website for our School and Teaching Hospital. They will develop and design the overall web experience for all stakeholders of our School and Animal Hospital. As part of this project, they will contribute to digital media strategic initiatives and serve as a subject-matter expert on website design and layout.
Responsibilities:
- Contribute to website strategy and recommend changes to leadership
- Develop and design the overall navigation flow, layout of specific pages, and creation of individual graphic elements; ensure that all design elements, templates, and finished solutions work within a variety of browser types and screen settings along with the constraints set by development and design
- Develop and implement strategic digital media initiatives, priorities, objectives, and best practices in collaboration with leadership and other functional work units
- Implement graphical and style standards for websites
- Evaluate and implement open source and commercial products to meet project needs
- Serve as a subject matter expert, consultant, and main point of contact for internal and external stakeholders regarding website and application options, design, maintenance, and support
Requirements:
Required Skills:
- Three or more years of experience designing and developing complex, accessible, and useful web properties using WordPress, following brand and WCAG 2.2 recommendations and standards
- Three or more years of experience working with multiple stakeholders to develop strategic website projects on a defined timeline
- Three or more years of experience using graphic design principles to develop beautifully alluring and engaging websites
Preferred Skills:
- Has experience in healthcare, higher education, or scientific research environments
- Has experience developing and/or deploying database-driven online applications, enabling content owners and providers to maintain their own web information
Interview Process: Zoom interview, with candidate sharing a portfolio of prior work
Duration of the Contract: 6/30/26 with the possibility of extension. Through end of fiscal year with likely extension (we’re anticipating six- to 12 months).
Onsite or Remote? Wisconsin residents only. No relocation allowed. This position will be hybrid, with two days working remotely, and three days working on-site at our offices on the UW-Madison campus.
Project details: The School of Veterinary Medicine is redesigning our entire web presence for our School and UW Veterinary Care Teaching Hospital to account for changing strategy and for an update to our websites’ accessibility. The contractor will work with the marketing and communications team, and the information technology team, under a project co-led by the directors of each function to deliver a redesigned web experience. While the contractor will work primarily with the Marketing and Technology teams, there will be ample opportunity for the contractor to engage with stakeholders for whom we are implementing this redesign.
