Summary

The Equity Research Technology team at Balyasny is dedicated to developing and maintaining a world-class suite of tools designed to empower our portfolio managers and their teams. Our tools span Research Management, Idea Generation, Professional Development, Broker Relations, and Portfolio Construction & Analytics. We are seeking an experienced and enthusiastic engineer to join our dynamic team. In this role, you will contribute to the enhancement, scalability, and support of our research technology platform, delivering both traditional and alternative research insights to investment users and executive management.

Passionate about leveraging technology to solve financial business challenges. Experienced in designing, building, and supporting robust software solutions used directly by the business.

Role Overview
  • Work closely with the portfolio manager development team to architect and build scalable front-office systems and services.
  • Collaborate in a fast-paced team environment to understand, engineer, and deliver on business requirements.
  • Strike the right balance across feasibility, stability, scalability, and time-to-market when delivering solutions.
  • Build and support applications focused on equity research generation, fundamental modeling, analytics, and data workflows.
  • Partner with engineering teams to evolve technical designs, clarify requirements, and improve system architecture.
  • Ensure the quality, accuracy, and reliability of products released to the investment staff.
  • Design and maintain backend components including APIs, services, data pipelines, integrations, and distributed processing workflows.
  • Improve system performance, observability, resiliency, and operational supportability across research platforms.

Qualifications & Requirements
  • 8-10+ years of experience as a software engineer, with strong proficiency in C#, Python, .NET, and API development.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to build strong relationships with technology, product, and business stakeholders.
  • Strong experience architecting and building backend applications, services, and system integrations.
  • Strong knowledge of MSSQL, including query design, schema design, table modeling, and performance tuning.
  • Proficient across core application development areas including authentication, API integration, build and deployment processes, testing, and validation.
  • Experience with code optimization, performance tuning, and source code control (preferably Git).
  • Self-starter with strong analytical skills, capable of troubleshooting and working independently.
  • Passionate about leveraging technology to solve business problems of varying scale and complexity.

Additional Experience Preferred
  • Experience building scalable APIs, backend services, and data-intensive applications.
  • Familiarity with modern LLM technologies and libraries (e.g., OpenAI API, LangChain, Llama).
  • Experience with databases and search platforms such as MongoDB, columnar databases, and OpenSearch.
  • Knowledge of Agile Development / SCRUM methodologies.
  • Experience working with financial market data from Bloomberg, Reuters, or similar providers.
  • Background in the hedge fund industry or financial software (e.g., research, risk management, portfolio accounting).

The ideal candidate is a hands-on engineer who is comfortable working directly with the business, understands how to build reliable and scalable systems, and thrives in an environment where technology has a direct impact on investment decision-making. While this role sits within a full stack team, the primary emphasis is on backend architecture , application design, data integration, and platform reliability.
