Summary

The Architectural Studies Program in the Department of History of Art and Architecture at the University of Pittsburgh invites applications for a part-time, non-tenure-track instructor to teach introductory and advanced studio courses. Position appointments may be renewable based on need, funding, and performance. The Architectural Studies Program emphasizes substantial academic and professional training that exposes students to a wide range of issues in the field. The program currently offers a liberal arts BA in Architectural Studies and a pre-professional BS in Architecture; both degrees are intended to position students to enter careers and graduate programs in architecture and related disciplines. We are committed to providing our students with a variety of perspectives, mentors, and role models, and seek colleagues whose teaching will extend our mission by contributing diverse perspectives and experiences to program initiatives.

Duties:
  1. Teach introductory or advanced studio design courses with a co-instructor. Studio courses meet in person, 2 evenings per week from 6:00 - 8:30 pm. Studio courses have established syllabi; new instructors will not be expected to develop courses from scratch.
  2. Meet with students beyond the classroom as may be appropriate to their educational needs
  3. Work closely with the Director of Architectural Studies and Studio Coordinator to coordinate curricular plans
  4. Provide regular feedback to students in the form of in-class desk critiques, reviews, and graded assignments.

Minimum Requirements:
  1. A professional degree in architecture (B.Arch. or M.Arch.).
  2. Knowledge of architectural design fundamentals (including analog drafting and physical model making).
  3. A demonstrated commitment to teaching, mentoring, and/or community service.
  4. Commitment to the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  5. Ability to become proficient in Canvas, the University of Pittsburgh's Learning Management System.

Preferred Requirements:
  1. Experience teaching university-level architecture studio
  2. Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, and Sketchup
  3. Working knowledge of Canvas.

Applications should include:
  1. Letter of interest addressing relevant skills, experience, and teaching philosophy
  2. Curriculum vitae
  3. A portfolio of creative work
  4. Contact information (full name, title, email) for three persons able to provide confidential professional letters of recommendation. We do not need the letters themselves at this time.

The review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. Questions may be directed to Drew Armstrong, Director of Architectural Studies () or Evan Zajdel, Department Administrator, History of Art & Architecture ().
