Sr Lead Akamai Engineer

Job Description

The ideal candidate is first and foremost an experienced Akamai

engineer, with strong networking and application security expertise.

This role is not primarily a project coordinator position. The

successful candidate should be capable of independently implementing

Akamai onboarding, configuring edge security controls, deploying

origin lockdown protections, troubleshooting issues, and driving

applications through production deployment.

This person should effectively combine the capabilities of:

Akamai Engineer

Networking Engineer

Application Security Engineer

Release Lead

Technical Program Lead

They should be comfortable owning the onboarding process end-to-end,

from CDN implementation and WAF configuration through production

cutover, validation, origin lockdown, and operational handoff.

Required

5+ years of hands-on Akamai engineering experience

Demonstrated experience configuring Akamai services directly within

the Akamai portal

5+ years of Application Security, Network Security, or Internet-facing

Application Engineering

Experience implementing Origin Lockdown controls

Experience deploying and managing WAF protections

Experience onboarding applications onto CDN and edge security platforms

Experience supporting production releases and cutovers

Experience troubleshooting DNS, TLS, networking, and application

connectivity issues

Experience coordinating across multiple application and infrastructure teams

Preferred

Experience leading Akamai onboarding initiatives at enterprise scale

Experience migrating applications from Imperva, F5, or alternative

edge platforms to Akamai

Experience protecting internet-facing healthcare or regulated-industry

applications

Experience with Akamai Application & API Protector (AAP)

Experience with large-scale attack-surface reduction programs

Job Responsibilities

Akamai & Edge Platform Implementation

Independently configure and manage Akamai platform services, including

CDN onboarding, Property Manager configurations, WAF policies,

security controls, and origin protection mechanisms.

Execute origin lockdown activities by implementing Akamai-based

controls that restrict direct access to backend application

infrastructure.

Configure, test, and validate Akamai security capabilities, including

WAF, Bot Management, API Protection, Edge Security, TLS, and

traffic-routing configurations.

Support application onboarding to the Akamai Edge platform and drive

implementation through production deployment.

Troubleshoot Akamai, networking, DNS, TLS, and application

connectivity issues during onboarding and cutover events.

Application Security & Risk Reduction

Assess publicly exposed origins and implement remediation strategies

to reduce internet-facing attack surface.

Validate application security posture following onboarding and

security control implementation.

Assist with deployment and tuning of WAF protections, API security

controls, and threat mitigation capabilities.

Partner with Application Security teams to ensure onboarding aligns

with enterprise security requirements.

Application Migration & Release Coordination

Coordinate application releases, cutovers, testing, rollback planning,

and production support activities.

Engage application owners and technical teams throughout the

onboarding lifecycle.

Validate application functionality before and after Akamai migration.

Support operational readiness activities and post-production stabilization.

Track onboarding progress, remediation activities, risk reduction

metrics, and implementation status.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

Coordinate with Networking, DNS, F5, CDN, Cloud Engineering,

Infrastructure, and Application Security teams.

Provide technical guidance to application teams regarding Akamai

onboarding patterns and origin protection requirements.

Akamai Platform Engineering (Highest Priority)

Candidates must possess strong hands-on Akamai experience and be

capable of independently implementing configurations within the Akamai

portal.
