Job Description: NoSQL DBA / Database Engineer (MongoDB Specialist)

Location: Hopkins, MN
Employment Type: Full-Time

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced NoSQL Database Engineer with deep expertise in MongoDB and working knowledge of additional NoSQL technologies including Elasticsearch, Cassandra, and Couchbase. The ideal candidate will design, implement, and maintain scalable, high-performance database solutions supporting enterprise applications and critical data services. This role involves hands-on engineering, database reliability management, cross-functional collaboration, and operational excellence.

Primary Skills - MongoDB (Required)
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience managing MongoDB in production environments
  • Expert understanding of MongoDB architecture, replication, sharding, and cluster management
  • Proven experience with performance tuning, query optimization, and index design
  • Strong knowledge of MongoDB Atlas and cloud-based deployment models
  • Experience with backup, restore, recovery, and disaster recovery planning
  • Solid understanding of security best practices: authentication, authorization, encryption
  • Familiarity with MongoDB aggregation framework and data modeling


Secondary Skills - Nice to Have
  • 2+ years of experience with Elasticsearch for search and analytics
  • Working knowledge of Cassandra for distributed, high-throughput workloads
  • Familiarity with Couchbase for caching and document storage
  • Understanding of NoSQL database selection criteria and architecture trade-offs


Technical Requirements
  • 7+ years of overall database administration/engineering experience
  • Strong scripting skills using Python, Bash, or JavaScript
  • Experience with database monitoring tools (e.g., APM solutions, cloud monitoring)
  • Solid understanding of Linux/Unix systems administration
  • Working knowledge of Docker, Kubernetes, and container-based deployments
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and Infrastructure as Code
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform)


Key Responsibilities

MongoDB Database Management
  • Design and implement scalable and highly available MongoDB database architectures
  • Execute capacity planning and resource optimization
  • Configure and manage replica sets and sharded clusters
  • Develop and enforce database best practices and coding standards
  • Monitor performance and perform tuning and optimization
  • Manage database security, including roles, authentication, and encryption
  • Execute and maintain backup & recovery strategies
  • Troubleshoot complex performance and stability issues

Multi-Database Support
  • Support Elasticsearch cluster configuration and index lifecycle management
  • Assist with Cassandra deployments for distributed workloads
  • Provide guidance on Couchbase implementations
  • Evaluate and recommend NoSQL technologies based on project requirements
  • Create and maintain comprehensive database documentation

Collaboration & Development
  • Partner with development teams for schema design and query optimization
  • Participate in code reviews focused on database interactions
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior team members

Operations & Maintenance
  • Implement monitoring and alerting solutions to ensure database health
  • Perform regular patching, upgrades, and maintenance
  • Develop and test disaster recovery and failover plans
  • Maintain runbooks, knowledge base articles, and operational documentation
  • Participate in on-call rotation for production support


Preferred Qualifications
  • MongoDB Certified DBA/Developer
  • Experience with data migration across heterogeneous database environments
  • Knowledge of data modeling for relational and NoSQL databases
  • Understanding of microservices architecture and distributed systems
  • Contributions to open-source NoSQL/database-related projects
