Department Overview

Engineer-In-Training (EIT) Program is an integral part of Transmission and Substation Engineering Services Department at Pacific Gas & Electric Company. Through collaboration with the PG&E Learning Academy, our EIT program delivers comprehensive onboarding and training for entry-level engineers, as well as ongoing professional development for all transmission and substation engineering staff.

Transmission and Substation Engineering support the Company's $1 billion capital investment in substation and transmission line projects. It is responsible for the preparation of detailed construction drawings for substations and transmission lines. We provide engineering expertise to upgrade, expand and replace the Company's infrastructure in the following:
Distribution Substations
Transmission Substations
Transmission Lines
Technical assistance on feasibility studies
Construction support
Provide valuable input in evaluating and cross-checking projects

Position Summary

As a summer intern, you will be the vital link between the company and widespread interconnection of generation, increase in capacity demand (residential, commercial and industrial) and system reliability improvements in California. Your role will be to work alongside with our EIT program team members in preparing, supporting, and delivering of EIT courses, and planning for onboarding new EIT cohorts.

The successful intern will have the opportunity to lead and/or support activities as described above working with teams of experienced engineers. Additionally, the intern will gain knowledge of the larger Transmission and Substation Engineering organization through the work they will be performing. We are looking for motivated, self-driven individuals who enjoy hands-on engineering, have excellent communications skills, high energy, and enjoy working in a team environment. This position is a hybrid position and will be required to show up in office at the discretion of the hiring leader. Travel is expected 10% of the time within the PG&E Service Territory.

PG&E is providing the hourly rate range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job. The actual hourly rate paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity.

The hourly rate for this position ranges from $24.52 to $35.37

Responsibilities

  • Actively promote safe practices and conduct in accordance with the Corporate Safety policy.
  • Accomplish the department goal of zero injuries & avoidable auto incidents.
  • Foster teamwork, innovation and embrace new approaches to accomplish our work more efficiently and effectively.
  • Develop and maintain automation tools and templates to improve engineering and design processes and training deliveries.
  • Assist with updating and maintaining utility standards and procedures for Substation Engineering and Design.
  • Support EIT course and training delivery by taking notes, collecting feedback, and helping with action planning to promote ongoing program improvement.
  • Ensure delivery of high-quality design products on budget and on time.
  • Support other team members in Transmission and Substation designs.
  • Work with and learn from other departments involved in Transmission and Substations such as Maintenance, Construction, Asset Strategy, Transmission and Distribution Planning, Standards, Protection, Automation, etc.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Earning a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering/Science degree within two years of the start of the internship
  • Must have a valid driver's license or obtain one at least 30 days prior to start date.

Desired:
EIT or FE certification
Engineering experience in utilities, municipalities, construction, or engineering consultation
Ability to work in a team environment and support fellow team members
Strong problem solving and analytical skills
Strong communication skills, both oral and written
Takes initiative and can work independently with minimal direction
Experience with Microsoft 365 application suites, SharePoint, Power App, Power Automate, PowerPoint, Access, Excel, Word, etc.

PG&E is unable to provide VISA sponsorship to students on an F-1, J-1 or other student visa for this position.
