Engineering Manager - Roadway & Stormwater Practice Leader (Kansas City)

Description A Brief Overview

The Roadway & Stormwater Practice Leader is responsible for the managerial direction and leadership of the roadway & stormwater departments in the Global Practice.

The Roadway & Stormwater Practice Leader will have full accountability for leading people, projects, and processes that enable delivery of profitable services in the geographic market served. This responsibility includes building a high-performance team through recruitment and people development, mobilizing them to conduct business development, and managing the execution of projects in cooperation with project managers and business line leaders. Additionally, the Roadway & Stormwater Practice Leader will report to the Director of Transportation and work closely with the Operations Director and other Practice Leaders to drive integration, consistency, and innovation across the business unit.

What you will do

• Manage development and execution of the overall Global Practice strategic business initiatives to achieve goals and objectives.
• Provide direction and oversight of efforts in identification and vetting of prospective clients and projects. Responsible for business development activities aligning with business goals.
• Provide leadership to their teams; direct and coordinate efforts to ensure efficient and cost-effective utilization of staff.
• Serve as the escalation point for at-risk projects, with authority to intervene in staffing, execution strategy, or client approach to restore project performance.
• Recommend changes in the department's structure and organization to achieve the objectives assigned to them.
• Define and maintain clear role boundaries, decision authority, and escalation paths, among team members within the discipline.
• Accountable to allocate time, resources, and leadership support to innovation efforts that improve long-term practice sustainability, scalability, and competitive positioning.
• Oversee the development of department tools and work flows to increase efficiency in planning, designs, specification development, and project execution and deliverables.
• Establish and review budgets and schedules for proposals.
• Direct oversight and management of the budget and expenditure of funds.
• Achieve stated targets and standards for Global Practice financial performance.
• Provide industry expertise with respect to the competition.
• Present monthly financial information to leadership including schedules and budget forecasts.
• Approve strategies for cross-selling services across the organization.
• Provide guidance to relative to set-up and structure of staffing and execution approach on projects and the associated interface with other disciplines.
• Support managers (Technical Manager and Project Execution Manager) to establish, monitor, and record historical metrics for project budget management.
• Responsible for ensuring alignment and support of staff development, quality control and resource coordination.
• Recruits, hires, develops, and retains outstanding employee-owners.
• Responsible for conducting performance evaluations for selected department or direct reports.
• Responsible for interpreting policies, purposes and goals of the organization.
• Adheres to and responsible for Burns & McDonnell Quality Control program.
• Ensure compliance with company and site safety policies.
• Responsible for maintaining compliance with equal employment opportunity initiatives.

Qualifications Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in engineering and 13 years professional engineering experience in specific industry; previous consulting engineering department management and project management experience is required.
• Excellent written & verbal communication skills, strong interpersonal skills and the ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees, management, and clients.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. This position requires an individual capable of applying intensive and diversified knowledge of principles and practices to broad areas of assignments.
• Demonstrated ability to devise new approaches to problems encountered.
• Demonstrated ability to thoughtfully and positively influence, lead, and manage change.
• Strong project management skills and a strategic perspective.
• Superior technical writing abilities.
• Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects and adhere to schedules and meet key deadlines.

Additional Qualifications (Preferred)

• Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or related field.
• Master's degree in business or engineering management.
• 13 years of progressively responsible experience in transportation planning, design, delivery, and project/team management.
• Proven success in establishing and maintaining client relationships, developing opportunities, and leading successful project pursuits.
• Demonstrated leadership in project delivery, staff development, and financial performance. Experience with alternative delivery and construction a plus.
• Proven success in building and leading multi-disciplinary teams.
• Recognized for technical excellence, innovation, and client service in the transportation industry.
• Professional Engineer (PE) or equivalent for the corresponding state of the Burns & McDonnell assigned office.
