We deliver innovative engineering, software, and technology integration services across NASA centers nationwide. Barrios prides itself on a people-focused culture that values creativity, diversity, professional growth, and a healthy work-life balance.

Barrios Technology is looking for a Software Developer I, with a focus in Applications and Data, to help develop internal supporting infrastructure and solutions, as well as software used on existing NASA and customer contracts. This early career role is for a developer with a strong computer science foundation who enjoys solving problems across the full software stack. You will design, build, test, and maintain applications, tools, and services using a range of programming languages and technologies. You will work alongside IT operations support personnel and other developers responsible for the core business functions of our internal applications. There are also opportunities to design and develop software for current contracts that delivers value-add capabilities to our clients. The ideal candidate has hands-on project experience building full-stack applications, working with relational databases, and developing in Linux environments. They also have a strong desire to learn new tools and frameworks as mission needs evolve.

Responsibilities

The Software Developer will:
  • Design, develop, test, and maintain software applications, tools, and services that support internal operations and contract deliverables.
  • Write clean, readable, well-structured code in languages such as Python, PHP, C++, Java, C#, JavaScript, or others as project needs dictate.
  • Develop backend logic and services and contribute to front-end interfaces with a focus on usability and UI/UX optimization.
  • Design and maintain relational database schemas and write efficient SQL queries to support application data needs.
  • Build utilities and automation scripts to streamline workflows, process data, and reduce manual effort.
  • Containerize and deploy applications using Docker and support cloud or on-premises hosting environments.
  • Apply sound data structures, algorithms, and object-oriented design principles to create scalable, reliable, and high-performing solutions.
  • Write unit tests and take responsibility for code quality, security, reliability, and performance.
  • Work closely with product owners, designers, IT operations, and other engineers to understand business requirements and translate them into technical specifications.
  • Troubleshoot, debug, and resolve application, server, and network issues in Linux/UNIX and Windows environments.
  • Take part in code reviews and follow version control best practices using Git.
  • Take part in Agile/Scrum ceremonies and contribute to continuous improvement of development infrastructure and processes.
  • Document code, designs, and processes for long-term maintainability.
  • Perform all other assigned duties.

Qualifications

Required Education/Experience/Skills:
  • BS degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field or anticipated degree by December 2026, from an accredited college or university.
  • Proficiency in more than one programming language (e.g., C++, Python, Java, C#, JavaScript, PHP).
  • Solid understanding of data structures, algorithms, and object-oriented programming principles.
  • Knowledge of database design and SQL, with hands-on experience using a relational database such as MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, or MS SQL Server.
  • Familiarity with Git for version control.
  • Understand the value of writing unit tests.
  • Detail oriented with the ability to manage and ensure quality work (completeness and accuracy).
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate technical concepts clearly.
  • Self-motivated and able to drive initiatives from end to end.
  • Ability to work with a distributed team, including remote locations and different time zones.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Team oriented.

Preferences:
  • Full-stack project experience building applications end to end (front-end UI, backend logic, and database).
  • Experience with web development technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and at least one web or application framework.
  • Experience with Linux/UNIX environments and network programming (TCP/IP, sockets, HTTP).
  • Experience with Docker and deploying applications to cloud platforms such as AWS.
  • Experience with asynchronous or concurrent programming.
  • Exposure to data processing, machine learning, or natural language processing libraries.
  • Experience with .NET and other Microsoft scripting and programming environments.
  • Experience working in a Scrum/Agile environment.
  • Interest in or experience with the Space Industry.
  • Tutoring, mentoring, or instructional experience in computer science or mathematics.
