Scope of Work: Market Intelligence & Insights Contractor

 

 

The Society’s membership is composed of individuals with diverse interests and objectives, ranging from undergraduate students in the chemical sciences to highly experienced chemical professionals in industry, academia, government, and other sectors. The Society includes over 180 local sections, more than 30 technical divisions, as well as student chapters and international chapters.

Under the Society’s Business Strategy and Operations (BSO) unit, the Research and Innovation (R&I) department serves as stewards of  research and innovation efforts across functional areas including Membership, Education and Career Development, Science, Research & Sustainability, and Meetings & Expositions. The department advises on defining key business questions, gathering relevant data from internal and external sources, conducting research and analysis, and translating findings into strategic recommendations that drive organizational decisions and innovation.

To support the development of market intelligence capabilities and strategic decision-making across company, the Research & Innovation department seeks a contractor with expertise in mixed-methods research, market intelligence, competitive analysis, and data visualization.

Purpose of Engagement

The purpose of this engagement is to provide ongoing market intelligence and research support that enables  leaders to make evidence-based decisions regarding strategy, innovation, member and customer needs, competitive positioning, product and program development, and emerging market opportunities.

The contractor will combine qualitative and quantitative research methods to identify trends, monitor market dynamics, assess competitive activity, synthesize insights, and create dashboards and visualizations that facilitate informed decision-making.

Scope of Work

The selected contractor will conduct strategic market and customer research, analyze internal and external data sources, and develop compelling insight deliverables that support organizational priorities.

Work may include the following activities:

Market Intelligence & Competitive Analysis

  • Conduct ongoing environmental scanning to identify emerging trends, opportunities, risks, and disruptions affecting stakeholders, members, customers, and business areas.
  • Monitor and assess competitor and peer organizations, including professional societies, publishers, educational organizations, scientific institutions, and adjacent industries.
  • Produce competitive intelligence reports, benchmarking analyses, market landscape assessments, and trend briefs.
  • Evaluate market developments, customer expectations, and evolving value propositions relevant to programs and services.

Mixed-Methods Research

  • Design and execute qualitative and quantitative research studies to address strategic business questions.
  • Conduct interviews, focus groups, surveys, concept tests, journey mapping exercises, and other research activities as needed.
  • Develop research plans, discussion guides, questionnaires, screening criteria, and analytical frameworks.
  • Identify and leverage appropriate primary and secondary research sources.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to define learning objectives and research priorities.

Insight Development & Strategic Recommendations

  • Synthesize findings across multiple data sources, including research studies, operational data, usage metrics, surveys, market intelligence, and external benchmarks.
  • Translate research findings into actionable business insights and recommendations.
  • Develop executive-ready narratives that clearly communicate implications, opportunities, risks, and recommended actions.
  • Support strategic planning, innovation initiatives, customer experience improvements, and growth opportunities through evidence-based recommendations.

Dashboard Development & Data Visualization

  • Design and develop dashboards that enable ongoing monitoring of key business, market, customer, and competitive indicators.
  • Create clear, compelling visualizations that communicate research findings and performance metrics.
  • Establish repeatable reporting frameworks and visualization standards.
  • Integrate research and intelligence outputs into business intelligence tools such as Power BI, Tableau, or equivalent platforms.

Stakeholder Communication

  • Present research findings and recommendations to senior leaders and cross-functional teams.
  • Facilitate stakeholder discussions, workshops, and insight-sharing sessions as needed.
  • Deliver concise reports, presentations, summaries, and executive briefings tailored to intended audiences.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor on research findings and market implications.

Expected Deliverables

Deliverables may include, but are not limited to:

  • Market landscape assessments, including addressable market model
  • Competitive intelligence reports
  • Trend and opportunity analyses
  • Quarterly or monthly intelligence reports
  • Dashboards and data visualization assets
  • Survey instruments and reports
  • Interview and focus group summaries
  • Presentation materials for leadership and stakeholder meetings

Contractor Qualifications

The ideal contractor will possess:

  • Demonstrated expertise conducting mixed-methods research, combining qualitative and quantitative approaches to answer strategic business questions.
  • 8+ years of experience in market research, market intelligence, competitive analysis, strategic insights, or management consulting.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex datasets and synthesize information into clear business implications.
  • Experience designing and conducting primary and secondary research.
  • Advanced proficiency in data visualization and dashboard development using tools such as Tableau, Power BI, or similar platforms.
  • Familiarity with analytics and data tools such as Qualtrics, SQL, R, Python, or similar platforms.
  • Strong written, verbal, and visual communication skills, including the ability to present findings to executive audiences.
  • Ability to independently manage multiple projects, prioritize competing demands, and deliver high-quality work within agreed timelines.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience supporting membership organizations, associations, nonprofits, higher education, scientific organizations, publishing organizations, or mission-driven enterprises.
  • Experience with market segmentation, customer experience research, concept testing, pricing research, or innovation-focused research programs.
  • Experience developing or operationalizing market intelligence functions, reporting systems, or insight repositories.

The engagement will be considered successful when the contractor:

  • Delivers timely, relevant, and actionable market intelligence.
  • Produces high-quality research that informs strategic decision-making.
  • Develops dashboards and visualizations that improve visibility into key market, customer, and business trends.
  • Identifies meaningful opportunities, risks, and competitive implications.
  • Effectively communicates insights to leadership and stakeholders in a clear, concise, and decision-oriented manner.
  • Establishes repeatable processes and deliverables that improve long-term market intelligence capabilities.
