Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Associate Director of Learning Systems to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the administration, support, and continuous improvement of our learning systems and related technologies. This role requires a strong technical background, excellent problem-solving skills, and the ability to inspire and lead a team of professionals to greater heights.

About UIT: University Information Technology (UIT), the central IT service provider for the University of Utah, reports to the U's Chief Information Officer and is responsible for many of the U's shared IT services including the wired and wireless network; Campus Information Services (CIS) portal; UMail, telephone, and online collaboration; digital learning technologies; information security; software licensing; and a host of other IT systems and services.

About the University of Utah: Located in Salt Lake City, the U is the flagship institution of the State of Utah's system of higher education, home to arts and museum venues and a member of the BIG-12 Conference. Skiing and snowboarding opportunities are a short distance from campus, and opportunities to pursue activities from biking to hiking to fishing abound. Salt Lake City is home to the Utah Symphony and Opera, Ballet West, professional sports teams, and a wide range of other cultural and recreational activities.

Responsibilities

Oversee the administration, stability, and optimization of all the University's learning systems, including Canvas LMS, integrations, and add-on tools. Ensure systems are secure, up to date, and aligned with institutional standards through regular monitoring, audits, upgrades, and strict enforcement of change management and testing practices.

Provide technical leadership across system architecture, integrations, and services. Validate team decisions and lead structured troubleshooting efforts. Ensure timely and accurate diagnosis and resolution of complex system issues, appropriately escalating when necessary. Guide team members to identify the root causes of system problems to avoid repeatedly encountering the same incidents.

Lead enterprise system implementations and upgrades, ensuring strong project management practices, including requirements definition, test planning, validation, and deployment. Oversee the development of key deliverables (e.g., RACI matrices, test plans, SOPs, roll-out plans) to ensure alignment with stakeholder expectations.

Oversee reporting and analytics related to learning system usage to support data-informed decision-making and continuous improvement.

Lead and develop a team of 5-10 technical staff by setting priorities, delegating effectively, and holding team members accountable for performance and adherence to best practices. Communicate clearly and effectively in meetings by providing concise, accurate updates and by facilitating focused discussions with diverse stakeholders. Demonstrate curiosity and a commitment to continuous learning to stay current with evolving technologies and best practices.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in related computer science area, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required; plus six years of progressively more responsible management experience; and demonstrated leadership, human relations and effective communication skills also required.

Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.

Preferences

Demonstrated ability to work effectively with technical teams, vendors, and stakeholders to deliver system or process improvements

Proven ability to troubleshoot complex issues and guide teams toward accurate resolution

Experience leading system implementations, upgrades, or platform roll-outs

Strong communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey information and lead productive discussions in meetings

Demonstrated ability to manage priorities, respond to urgent issues, and ensure accuracy in reporting and execution

Experience in higher education with learning technologies (e.g., LMS/CMS platforms)

Experience with system integrations, APIs, or data/reporting tools

Familiarity with IT service management (ITSM), change management, or incident response processes

Demonstrated success improving workflows, processes, or system adoption in complex organizations

Evidence of continuous learning (certifications, training, or applied experience with emerging tools and technologies)

Type
