Role: Mechanical Design Engineer (Gears/Bearings)
Location: Huntsville, AL (Onsite)
Duration: 6-9 Months+ (potentially up to 1-2 years)
Hours: 40 hours with some weeks potentially up to 50-60 hours (currently 8.5 Hours/day)
Candidate Profile: Not necessarily a degreed mechanical engineer; designers are welcome, a degree is great but not required.
Core Software: Must be proficient in SolidWorks; knowledge of PDM is important.
Project Focus: The role primarily supports the Terrapower project, specifically the "in vessel transfer machine" for the natrium reactor, a large 60-foot-tall mechanism.
Technical Expertise: Strong machine design orientation (gears, bearings), experience with DFM (design for manufacturing) /assembly (weldments, weld maps), and knowledge of ASME code (B31.3 piping background is a plus).
Job Duties: Taking direction from engineers, making model changes, creating models, and issuing draft files/drawings, with an understanding of ASME Y14.100 standards.
Work Environment: A collaborative environment requiring adaptability, good temperament, and the ability to work with diverse personalities and experience levels.
On-Site Requirement: The job is 100% on campus, with core hours from 9 AM to 3 PM, requiring 8.5 hours on campus for 8 hours charged, and no working through lunch.
Workload & Duration: Currently 40-hour weeks but could easily go to 50-60 hours; the contract duration could be 6-9 months, up to 1-2 years.
