We're a global team of innovators working where light meets technology, solving big challenges that keep the world connected and moving forward. If shaping the future of connectivity excites you, you'll fit right in.

Why You'll Love This Role

The Mechanical Component Engineer is responsible for the selection, qualification, approval, lifecycle management, and reliability oversight of mechanical components used in optical, telecom, datacom, and electronic products.

The candidate will work closely with Mechanical Design, R&D, Supplier Quality, Procurement, Manufacturing, Compliance, and suppliers to ensure that mechanical components meet design, performance, quality, reliability, cost, and long-term availability requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Engineering and Supplier Quality to drive manufacturability into mechanical component design and selection.
  • Own Component Engineering activities for mechanical components, including technical requirements, selection, qualification, lifecycle management, reliability, and engineering change assessment.
  • Collaborate with R&D and Supplier Quality to drive manufacturability into mechanical component design, specifications, and selection.
  • Define and review component specifications, drawings, CTQs, tolerances, and acceptance criteria to ensure robust and manufacturable designs.
  • Lead technical qualification of new and alternate mechanical components, including dimensional, material, functional, environmental, and reliability validation.
  • Partner with Supply Chain and Supplier Quality on alternate-source development, providing technical qualification and component risk assessment.
  • Assess mechanical component performance, materials, manufacturing processes, tolerance stack-ups, and reliability risks throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Evaluate PCNs, EOLs, material/process changes, and engineering changes for technical and product impact.
  • Lead technical problem-solving and failure analysis for component-related issues, partnering with Supplier Quality on supplier corrective actions.
  • Support R&D, Manufacturing, and Contract Manufacturers in resolving component-related design, assembly, manufacturability, and production issues.
  • Establish and maintain mechanical component engineering standards, qualification requirements, and technical documentation

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Five or more years of experience in mechanical component engineering, mechanical design, supplier quality, manufacturing engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical components, materials, and manufacturing processes used in precision electromechanical, electronic, or optical products.
  • Experience interpreting mechanical drawings, specifications, material standards, and inspection reports.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes such as machining, stamping, molding, casting, extrusion, plating, surface finishing, and mechanical assembly.
  • Working knowledge of tolerance analysis, dimensional control, metrology, and root-cause analysis.
  • Experience reviewing material certifications, RoHS/REACH declarations, certificates of compliance, and supplier quality documentation.
  • Ability to evaluate mechanical and material risks associated with environmental exposure, vibration, shock, thermal cycling, corrosion, and long-term operation.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and technical-writing skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple technical activities and work effectively with global suppliers and cross-functional engineering teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with optical communication, telecom, datacom, photonics, electronics, aerospace, medical, or other high-reliability products.
  • Experience with precision mechanical components, tight-tolerance assemblies, and mechanical interfaces used in optical or electronic products.
  • Experience with 3D CAD tools such as Creo, SolidWorks, CATIA, or equivalent.
  • Experience with GD&T standards such as ASME Y14.5.
  • Experience with dimensional and mechanical characterization methods, including CMM, surface-finish measurement, and coating/thickness measurement.
  • Experience with component lifecycle and engineering change management, including PCNs, EOLs, engineering changes, and alternate-component qualification.
  • Familiarity with applicable mechanical, material, reliability, and industry standards.
  • Experience with thermal management, thermal interface materials, and thermal-mechanical design is a plus.

Key Competencies

  • Mechanical engineering judgment
  • Materials and manufacturing-process knowledge
  • Component reliability and technical risk assessment
  • Dimensional and tolerance analysis
  • Data-driven root-cause problem solving
  • Cross-functional and supplier technical collaboration
  • Ability to influence without direct authority
