In this role, the Controls Engineer will be primarily responsible for maintaining and improving automotive manufacturing equipment. The position involves diagnosing intermittent problems, assisting electricians to get systems online, and conducting traceability projects, such as tracking down a barcode, learning the history of the part, and finding solutions. A typical day includes specifying hardware, updating AutoCAD electrical drawings, and collaborating with the maintenance team. Additionally, the Controls Engineer will be assigned small project work, such as adding a barcode scanner to an existing line or integrating a blower into a robotic cell.
Responsibilities
- Design and recommend control system architecture, products, components, and applications used in manufacturing processes; identify and resolve system integration and interface issues.
- Work with Fanuc and Siemens automation equipment; troubleshoot Fanuc robots.
- Utilize Hirschmann managed switches and Ethernet/IP topology.
- Evaluate new and emerging manufacturing and control technologies, adapting into specifications as appropriate.
- Design, develop, select components, evaluate, and install machine controls hardware.
- Confirm control system functionality, including appropriate safety compliance, by designing and/or executing test procedures.
- Prepare and/or review electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic controls drawings; collaborate with related engineering teams to evaluate components, materials, and suppliers.
- Maintain equipment operation by performing periodic audits, troubleshooting breakdowns, requesting supplies, defining and reviewing preventive maintenance plans, calling for repairs, and implementing process improvements.
Essential Skills
- 3+ years of controls engineering experience.
- Experience in troubleshooting Allen-Bradley/Rockwell PLCs.
- Experience in troubleshooting Fanuc robots, CNC machining, Electrical Design, and HMI.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- An Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology Degree (Associates or above) is nice to have.
- Experience leading a group of Controls/Maintenance Technicians.
- Motivation to advance within the company and specialize in certain skillsets like robotics, PLCs, HMIs, or system integration.
Work Environment
The work environment is fast-paced, as it is an automotive made-to-order supplier with three production shifts running. The facility is very clean and smaller in size, with approximately 50 employees at the Rochester plant. The position operates during the 1st shift from 7 A.M. to 4 P.M.
