AI Image Recognition & SOP Compliance | DoD Secure Systems | Team Leadership

Location: Remote (Eastern Time Zone)
Reports To: BG Workforce Chief Technology Officer
Clearance: Secret-Eligible, DoD Program

Mandatory Eligibility Requirements
U.S. Citizenship Required: no exceptions. Candidates of the United States to be considered for this position.

Company Overview

BG Workforce Solutions equips the U.S. Military, Federal Government, Allied Military, and Domestic Organic Industrial Bases with the solutions and tools necessary to recruit, train, and sustain a skilled workforce. As part of our High Velocity Talent Continuum, we specialize in workforce modernization, digital transformation, and mission-critical software development.

Position Summary

BG Workforce Solutions is seeking a highly experienced Senior AI Developer to support mission-critical Department of Defense (DoD) technology initiatives. This role focuses on designing and delivering advanced AI-driven image recognition and computer vision solutions capable of detecting, validating, and determining whether defined Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are being executed correctly in operational environments. In addition to hands-on technical delivery, this role leads a team of AI/ML engineers, providing technical direction, mentorship, and oversight to ensure the team delivers high-quality, mission-ready AI solutions. This position plays a strategic role in developing intelligent systems used by the U.S. Military and its partners to improve compliance, safety, operational efficiency, and situational awareness across secure environments.

Program Context

This role directly supports BG Workforce’s equipment-agnostic SOP compliance platform, a real-time visual monitoring system that observes a technician or operator performing a procedure and verifies, step by step, that each action is executed correctly. The platform is designed to be reconfigurable across equipment types (aircraft, ships, engines, and other DoD systems) rather than built as a one-off solution for a single platform, so the AI architecture must generalize across domains and support rapid onboarding of new SOPs.

Key Responsibilities

AI/ML Development

  • Design, develop, and deploy AI/ML solutions focused on image recognition and computer vision.
  • Build systems capable of detecting, classifying, and validating SOP execution from image and video data.
  • Develop and train deep learning models (CNNs, transformers, vision models) for real-world operational use.
  • Develop temporal and sequence-aware models (action recognition, video transformers) capable of verifying that SOP steps occur in the correct order, not just that required objects or actions are present.

Platform Architecture

  • Design a modular, reconfigurable AI architecture that allows the platform to be extended to new equipment types and SOPs without full model retraining.
  • Design real-time operator feedback mechanisms that surface in-the-moment alerts when a step is missed or performed incorrectly.
  • Build SOP authoring and ingestion tooling that allows subject matter experts to configure new procedures and equipment profiles without direct ML engineering support.
  • Integrate AI models with secure backend systems and operational platforms.
  • Support deployment to cloud and edge environments for real-time or near-real-time analysis.

Team Leadership

  • Lead and manage a team of AI/ML developers, including task planning, code and model reviews, and performance feedback.
  • Mentor and develop team members, fostering technical growth and consistent engineering practices across the AI team.
  • Coordinate sprint planning, task prioritization, and delivery timelines for the AI development team.
  • Provide technical guidance and architectural leadership for AI initiatives.

Compliance & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Collaborate with subject matter experts to translate SOPs into machine-detectable workflows and rules.
  • Evaluate model accuracy, bias, performance, and reliability in controlled and operational environments.
  • Ensure all AI solutions comply with DoD security, data handling, and ethical AI requirements.
  • Present findings, system capabilities, and recommendations to technical leadership and stakeholders.

Required Qualifications

Citizenship & Clearance

  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Must pass a military background check.
  • Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a Secret-level security clearance.

Experience

  • 7+ years of software development experience with at least 4+ years focused on AI/ML systems.
  • 2+ years of experience leading or managing a team of software or AI/ML engineers, including task delegation, mentorship, and performance management.
  • Extensive experience with computer vision and image recognition technologies.
  • Proven success building AI models that operate in real-world, imperfect data environments.
  • Experience developing SOP-aware or rules-informed AI systems.
  • Experience working in DoD, government, or highly regulated environments.
  • Hands-on experience deploying models into production systems.
  • Experience with safety-critical or high-consequence inspection domains (e.g., aviation MRO, maritime, industrial equipment safety) strongly preferred, given the platform’s cross-equipment deployment on systems from aircraft to ships to engines.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, or related field (Master’s degree preferred).

Knowledge & Skills

  • Expertise in Python and AI/ML frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow, OpenCV).
  • Strong understanding of computer vision techniques (object detection, tracking, pose estimation).
  • Experience with temporal or video-based action recognition (3D CNNs, video transformers, LSTMs, or similar) for verifying multi-step sequences.
  • Experience with transfer learning, domain adaptation, or few-shot learning techniques to generalize models across new equipment types without full retraining.
  • Experience building or working with data labeling and annotation pipelines to support model training on new SOPs and equipment.
  • Experience translating procedural workflows into machine-interpretable logic using rule engines, finite state machines, or workflow orchestration techniques.
  • Experience with real-time inference optimization and latency reduction to support in-the-moment operator feedback.
  • Knowledge of secure software development and DoD cybersecurity requirements.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, with the ability to guide, mentor, and hold a technical team accountable to delivery and quality standards.

Desired Skills & Certifications

  • Familiarity with MLOps, model monitoring, and lifecycle management.
  • Cloud and container experience (AWS, Azure, Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Prior experience supporting AI initiatives for defense or intelligence programs.
  • Security+, AI-related certifications, or equivalent experience.

Work Environment

  • Ability to work independently in a remote setting with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to work within the Eastern Time Zone.
  • Must maintain a home office compliant with company and DoD security standards.

This senior-level role offers the opportunity to shape cutting-edge AI capabilities supporting national defense and operational excellence.
