Hiring: STARLIMS Developer / LIMS Engineer

About the Opportunity

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) is seeking an experienced STARLIMS Developer / LIMS Engineer to support the State Laboratory for Public Health. This role focuses on designing, developing, customizing, and maintaining laboratory information management solutions built on the STARLIMS platform.

The ideal candidate will have strong experience with STARLIMS development, SQL, JavaScript, .NET technologies, and laboratory workflows within regulated environments. You'll collaborate with laboratory experts, QA teams, and IT professionals to deliver scalable, compliant, and high-performing LIMS solutions.

Key Responsibilities

STARLIMS Development

• Design, configure, customize, and maintain STARLIMS applications.
• Develop backend business logic using STARLIMS Scripting Language (SSL).
• Build client-side functionality using JavaScript/JScript.NET.
• Develop SQL queries, stored procedures, and workflow automation.
• Support system enhancements and modernization initiatives.

User Interface & Application Development

• Configure and enhance HTML5-based STARLIMS user interfaces (v11/v12).
• Develop XML-based structure definitions for server/client communication.
• Support migration of legacy STARLIMS XFD runtime components when required.

Database & System Support

• Support STARLIMS applications running on the Microsoft .NET Framework.
• Work with Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle database environments.
• Troubleshoot application, database, and server performance issues.
• Ensure application stability, scalability, and compliance.

Reporting & Instrument Integration

• Develop reports, labels, and barcodes using SAP Crystal Reports.
• Integrate laboratory instruments using TCP/IP and RS232 communication protocols.
• Support reliable laboratory data acquisition and reporting.

Collaboration & Documentation

• Work closely with laboratory SMEs, QA teams, validation teams, and IT support.
• Create technical documentation, functional specifications, and validation records.
• Participate in testing, upgrades, patch deployments, and validation activities.

Required Qualifications

• 8–10 years of overall IT experience supporting enterprise applications.
• 2+ years of hands-on STARLIMS (v10/v11/v12 or equivalent LIMS platform) experience.
• 5+ years of experience with:
  • STARLIMS Scripting Language (SSL)
  • JavaScript / JScript.NET
  • SQL
  • HTML5 UI Frameworks
  • SAP Crystal Reports
• Strong understanding of laboratory information management systems (LIMS).
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
• Experience working with cross-functional technical and business teams.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with Microsoft .NET Framework environments.
• Familiarity with XML-based data structure definitions.
• Knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server or Oracle database administration.
• Understanding of laboratory workflows, QA/QC processes, and regulated environments (GMP, GLP, CLIA, ISO 17025).
• Experience integrating laboratory instruments using TCP/IP or RS232.
• Background in pharmaceutical, biotech, clinical, environmental, or public health laboratories.
• Experience with STARLIMS legacy modernization projects.
• State Government experience is a plus.
