Hardware Systems Engineer

Duration: 1+ Years Contract

Location: Saint Paul MN/ Onsite

Shift: 1st shift position - 8 am to 4:30 pm

Position Summary
The Hardware Systems Engineer is responsible for integrating advanced sensors and hardware solutions onto Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) platforms. This role requires experience in systems engineering practices, mechanical design, UAS instrumentation, hardware testing and validation, along with strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to customer success.

The successful candidate will support integration planning and execution, mechanical design activities, hardware validation and testing, flight operations, technical documentation development, and Level 2 engineering support.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design mechanical components related to sensor and hardware integration.
  • Plan and execute sensor and hardware integrations for new UAS platforms.
  • Maintain existing sensor integrations across supported platforms.
  • Plan and execute hardware integration activities for UAS systems.
  • Conduct UAS flight testing and data collection activities.
  • Design, fabricate, and document wire harness assemblies.
  • Create and maintain internal engineering and production documentation.
  • Develop and maintain customer-facing technical documentation.
  • Provide Level 2 engineering support for products and integrations.
  • Perform hardware and software compatibility testing involving sensors, UAS platforms, and third-party processing applications.
  • Create and maintain engineering drawings, specifications, and bills of materials (BOMs).

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Proficiency with CAD software, with a minimum of one year of experience (PTC Creo preferred).
  • Ability to obtain FAA Part 107 certification within three months of employment.
  • Experience working with UAS (drone) platforms is preferred.
  • Experience with Pixhawk autopilot hardware and PX4 and ArduPilot flight control systems.
  • Familiarity with MAVLink communication protocols is preferred.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and technical problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to independently interpret technical requirements and specifications.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and analytical skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within cross-functional teams.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Additional Responsibilities
  • Facilitate engineering change management and documentation updates between engineering and production teams.
  • Serve as a technical point of contact between internal engineering teams and external technology partners.
  • Assist in defining product improvement, sustainment, and lifecycle management criteria.
  • Develop subject matter expertise related to the organization's sensor and hardware solutions, including functionality, integration methods, and applications.

Hiring Manager Preferences
  • Candidates with hands-on experience working with Pixhawk autopilot hardware, PX4 and ArduPilot flight-stack firmware, and other MAVLink-based systems are highly preferred.
  • Must demonstrate a strong willingness to learn and expand expertise in UAS technologies and related systems.
  • Ability to quickly understand sensor and hardware products and successfully integrate them with various UAS platforms is essential.
